Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshyra Williams.
Keshyra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Absolutely, I’d be glad to share a bit about my journey. I’m originally from Chicago, born and raised. Right now, I’m fully engaged in my Ph.D. program in Behavior Analysis, aiming to become one of the less than 4 percent of blackboard-certified behavior analysts. It’s been quite the journey, starting from my undergrad days at the University of Michigan, where I focused on Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience. Then, I made my way to sunny California for my master’s at the University of Southern California, diving into Integrated Design, Business, and Technology.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve been passionate about merging psychology and the arts with a global perspective, especially fascinated by its potential to enhance entrepreneurship and organizational behavior management. This year has been particularly rewarding as I’ve had the honor of holding the title of Miss Black Global 2024. This experience, along with my lifelong membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has emphasized the importance of community and sisterhood in everything I do in my life.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of the words of Maya Angelou, who said, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” It’s been a mix of academia, creativity, and chasing dreams, and I’m truly grateful for every step of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Honestly, not exactly. My journey has been quite the ride, but it’s been incredibly transformative, starting way back when I was adopted at age 4 in Chicago. Growing up without my biological parents was tough. It felt like I was navigating the world without a map, but my grandma was always there to guide me through.
Transitioning from Chicago to pursue higher education in Michigan and later California presented its own set of challenges and opportunities for growth. Being away from home, away from everyone I knew, it was a challenge. But it taught me resilience and determination like nothing else could. Moreover, reconnecting with my birth mom in 2023 for our first Christmas together was a moment I’ll never forget. It showed me the power of family and connection in a whole new light.
Through it all, I’ve learned so much about myself. Every setback has been a chance to grow, to learn, to become stronger, shaping me into the person I am today. Challenges aren’t roadblocks; they’re opportunities for self-reliance through adversity. And I’m grateful for every single one of them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s not just about making a difference—it’s about igniting lasting change. What sets me apart is my unwavering dedication and passion for creatively bridging the gaps between psychology, performing arts, and entrepreneurship. Beyond academia, I hold licenses as a realtor in both California and my hometown, Chicago. Furthermore, while also actively immersing myself in the world of acting, singing, dancing, and poetry writing.
Additionally, I’m the founder and visionary behind Entertainment Psychology—a platform that integrates behavior science with psychology, entertainment, and the arts. Through this initiative, I aim to not only revitalize individual behavioral health, but empower originality. I firmly believe and recognize the transformative potential of merging these diverse fields to address complex behavioral challenges.
I’ve always had a multitude of passions, and I take particular joy in the opportunity that Entertainment Psychology, along with my prior experience across industries, provides to nurture safe environments for youth facing behavioral or trauma-based mental health challenges. Offering multidisciplinary options to help them find balance is something I’m truly proud of. Looking ahead, I envision this platform evolving into a valuable source of mentorship and guidance, making a significant impact on both individual behavioral health and societal well-being.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
You know, Los Angeles has this incredible mix of people and energy that I find truly inspiring. It’s like everyone here is on their own unique journey, chasing their dreams with such passion. As a USC alum, I’ve been fortunate to be part of this vibrant community, which has been incredibly enriching. And, as a realtor, I have to say, the real estate scene here? Absolutely mesmerizing.
But if there’s one thing I wish we could focus more on, it’s having conversations about the impact of significant events like homelessness and other societal challenges on our young people. This includes those who may often be overlooked, such as kids who age out of foster care or are adopted, similar to my own experience. I strongly believe we need to create more spaces and resources dedicated to supporting their mental health and guiding them through these challenging times. It’s about laying a solid foundation for their future success. By investing in programs and initiatives that prioritize mental health education and assistance, we can foster a stronger and more resilient community for generations to come.
