Meet Yash Bhatnagar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yash Bhatnagar.

Yash Bhatnagar

Hi Yash, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Yash Bhatnagar, a graduate student at Dodge College of Film & Media Arts, Chapman University, specializing in Cinematography. Coming from a background in Computer Engineering, I’ve transitioned into the world of filmmaking. I have spent the last two years delving deeper into the art and science of visual storytelling.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Engineering, I found myself at a crossroads. While the field offered stability, I realized my true passion lay elsewhere – in cinematographer. After diverging from my initial academic path, I boldly decided to pursue my passion wholeheartedly. Embracing the challenge, I embarked on a journey to explore the art of cinematography, driven by a deep-seated desire to immerse myself in the world of evocative visuals and fascinating narratives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While I would not call them struggle, there have been a set of challenges that I had to face before I could be here. Transitioning from engineering to cinematography can be a significant shift, marked by professional hurdles. One of the primary hurdles is navigating the departure from a field that may be more structured to one that is highly creative and often volatile.

While engineering and cinematography may share some technical aspects, such as understanding equipment and problem-solving, the artistic and storytelling elements of cinematography require a different set of competencies. Learning the intricacies of composition, lighting, and visual storytelling can be a new experience. Pursuing cinematography may involve periods of freelance work and uncertainty, especially in the initial stages of building a portfolio and establishing oneself in the industry. Entering a new industry means starting from the ground up, networking, and building connections within the filmmaking community. This process requires persistence, patience, and a willingness to learn from setbacks.

Many individuals like myself find fulfillment and satisfaction in following their passions and pursuing a career in cinematography. The journey may be challenging, but the opportunity to express creativity, tell compelling stories, and make a meaningful impact through visual media often makes the struggle worthwhile.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My journey into cinematography is a mixture of curiosity, a passion for storytelling, and a genuine fascination with the visual medium. The day I first held my dad’s old DSLR, my interest in cameras evolved into an obsession with visual arts.

I am pursuing my Masters in cinematography, blending conceptual knowledge with hands-on experience. I have spent time working with industry-standard equipment and actively sought opportunities to contribute to independent projects. Each endeavor has served as a steppingstone, allowing me to refine my craft, learn from obstacles, and collaborate with like-minded people who share my passion. My history with photography and a background in technology allow me to hold a unique perspective on cinematography. With the industry’s rapid evolution, my fascination with tech drives me to remain informed on modern filmmaking landscapes. Mastering cutting-edge tools in cinematography is a skill set I strive to hone, which will constantly help me elevate the quality of my work.

Through this journey, I’ve come to view cinematography not merely as a profession but as a playground for artistic expression. It enables me to seamlessly blend technical proficiency with creative storytelling, resulting in evocative visuals that resonate deeply with me and, as a result, with the audience. Looking ahead, my ambition is to refine my style, explore more innovative techniques, and expand the boundaries of visual storytelling.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
There are a lot of things I wish I had known when I was starting, but I am grateful to have learned everything organically in good time. Embarking on a journey in cinematography may initially seem glamorous, but it requires substantial dedication and effort. Behind the scenes, it’s a realm of hard work and commitment, demanding persistence and willingness to work in stress.

Learning never stops in the world of filmmaking. Even when you feel confident, new challenges always come up, reminding us that there’s always more to learn. Every day brings new opportunities to grow and learn something new. So, it’s important to stay humble and open to advice. Filmmaking is a collaborative medium of art; hence, communication is the skeleton of a healthy working set. Delegation, in my eyes, is crucial for effective teamwork and achieving goals efficiently. Nobody knows everything perfectly, which is why asking for help and listening to others’ suggestions is so valuable. The more experience I gauge, the more I am open to acknowledging the importance of clear and grateful communication. So, if one is starting, my biggest advice for them would be to go with the flow and never stop learning.
