Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby York.
Hi Ruby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, I was lucky enough to have an eclectic upbringing that fostered creativity. At a young age I was dipping my hands into musical instruments, ballet, writing, and theatre. I realized I wanted to be an actor just as I was graduating high school at the young age of 16. Since then, I have wholeheartedly loved being an actor. My writing appeared around 14 years old and transformed into its own brand, “rubywritespoems,” when I created an Instagram account dedicated to just my poetry in 2016. Since then, I have been selling zines, publishing and posting poetry online consistently. What started as a poetry account has slowly transformed into a space of many forms of creative writing, poetry, and human expression. I do believe my acting and writing come from the same source. I plan on sharing it with the world for as long as I can.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It never is quite a smooth road when it comes to creative pursuit. That is part of where the creativity stems from. Acting has always been an art; when it comes, you hold on for dear life and pour into it, and when it goes, you endlessly yearn for it. The best part of acting is having time with a solid role. Really getting to sit in it. That is when the road smooths out. The audition process these days with at-home audition tapes has provided some twists and turns as well. Actors are now camera operators, directors, and editors. I think a lot of actors miss the days of going into the casting room and being able to get direction, do multiple takes, and feel the energy of the room. My writing comes from a deeper and darker space so that road is ever-winding, twisting, and turning, but I would not have it any other way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been a working film actor for over a decade of my life. As an actor, I have a strong suit in my versatility between both comedy and drama. I am the type of actor who is comfortable throwing away or changing dialogue last minute. I think what sets me apart is my ability to handle the improvisation both comedically and dramatically. I studied dramatic improvisation and character building which is more unique in the world of acting. I am proud of my ability to hold a character close and be so free with her that she is not confined to the words. What sets me apart as a writer is the ability to say a lot with few words, and the ability to articulate a complex emotion in a poetic way. I am most proud of the fact there are people who it deeply resonates with.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a role in my life in many ways. I do believe in synchronicity and divine timing. The most I can say on this is sometimes you meet the right person at the right time, and wind up working together creatively down the line. That is luck in its finest form.
