Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Wolfe.
Hi Joy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Las Vegas and raised by itinerant artists. While I was a toddler, we lived in a tricked-out trailer near the Mojave desert. My father was a wannabe filmmaker and an abusive wildcard. So, my mom hustled our way out of the desert and literally onto Hollywood Blvd to pursue his dreams but also secure our safety. A family tragedy would bring us to New Mexico when I was eleven. I spent my teenage years obsessed with becoming a filmmaker.
After some truly iconic traveling in my early twenties, I returned to LA to pursue my big dreams. Los Angeles is truly one of the loves of my life (albeit toxic at times) and the focus of most of my work. The past seven years have been wilder than my wildest dreams but filled with some very hard lessons. However, I wouldn’t be the artist I am today without this city and the stardust strangers who have shaped me along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My childhood was very New Age spiritual, yet I was born into a violent home. Unfortunately, abuse would be a theme for the first nineteen years of my life. I asked to see my first therapist when I was seven and continued the healing journey and tried many modalities throughout my life.
However, in my adulthood, my trauma has rebranded as anxiety, depression, OCD, mania, PTSD, an eating disorder, a staggering lack of self-worth, and some very dysfunctional relationships. Seeing this in print, I’m surprised I’ve made it this far! But what’s the point of being a witchy, hot girl healer if I can’t transmute this unnecessary pain into beauty?
Honestly, I am still dealing with it every day, but I am doing my best to choose to live in my namesake joy. It seems part of my healing journey has been sharing the darker parts of my story. In my own experience, the darkness is a lot less scary when you know you aren’t the only one going through it.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a spiritual comedian, writer, and filmmaker. This past December, I released my first featurette, “The East Hollywood Project.”
It’s a pandemic portrait of the symphony of strangers in my zesty neighborhood.
I’ve also written, produced, and directed a web series and a short film.
I love to model and act because I’m a Leo with something to prove.
My wildest role by far was walking on fire with Jeff Goldblum on his show.
After washing up from acting school, I became a comedian. It’s been almost six years. I’ve been blessed to perform in LA, New York, and Oakland. Producing and performing in two shows at Hollywood Forever Cemetery will always be highlights of my career.
Last year, I started my podcast “Just Happy To Be Here,” and I’m releasing my second season this summer!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
All I can say is I truly hope there is an authentic paradigm shift in Hollywood. I hope the entertainment industry only gets kinder, more inclusive, and more supportive. We need fewer sequels and reboots and more opportunities for artists with different backgrounds and perspectives. The human experience is so deliciously diverse, and mainstream media desperately needs to reflect that.
