Daily Inspiration: Meet Diana Lee Santamaria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Lee Santamaria.

Diana Lee Santamaria

Hi Diana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child, I was always drawn to creative pursuits like writing, acting, drawing, and painting. However, when I pursued a degree in speech communications, I found myself questioning how it aligned with my passions. To meet my parents’ expectations, I opted for a simpler major.

During my final year of college, I had the opportunity to work at a small PR firm. It was there that I encountered a publicist who had previously been a pre-K teacher. Her story inspired me to explore teaching certification, a decision that would ultimately shape my career path.

Teaching became my calling, and I pursued further education, earning a Master’s in Early Childhood Education. During this time, I rediscovered my love for writing. I began crafting stories that resonated with my students, drawing inspiration from their interests and classroom experiences.

In 2014, I took the leap and became an indie author, launching the DLee’s World bilingual book series. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to combine my passion for education and storytelling. My students continue to be my greatest source of inspiration, and I am excited to continue to see where this path leads.

Recently, I’ve expanded my efforts to promote early literacy by hosting fun, animated storytime readings with the local community media station in New York. These sessions not only feature my own books but also works by other authors. As someone who struggled with reading as a child, I understand the importance of early literacy. My aim is to promote early and bilingual literacy, diversity, and reading made fun!

I’ve also taken on the role of a literacy advocate, working to ensure that children from all backgrounds have access to quality books and resources. Through my work as an indie author and educator, I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child feels empowered to explore the world of literature.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but that’s the reality of life. We are always learning and growing, and the publishing industry is no exception. I’ve been navigating this journey on my own, without representation, which has presented its own set of challenges. I’ve had to learn how to hire help for illustrations, editing, and other professional services. Additionally, I’ve had to develop my skills in promoting my work to schools, libraries, and on social media. While I still feel there’s room for improvement in this area, I’m constantly working to enhance these skills.

Despite the challenges, one thing remains true: I love what I do. I find the most fulfillment when I’m immersed in my work, creating stories that inspire and entertain young readers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an early childhood educator with a passion for promoting literacy in young children. I specialize in creating engaging and educational content that encourages early and bilingual literacy.

I’m known for my work as an educator and author, particularly for the DLee’s World bilingual book series. These books are designed to entertain and educate children while promoting literacy in both English and Spanish.

I’m most proud of the impact my work has had on children’s literacy. As someone who struggled with reading as a child, I understand the importance of early literacy and am proud to be able to contribute to this field.

My unique background as an educator, author, and storyteller sets me apart from others in my industry. My personal struggles with literacy, combined with my knowledge and experience as a teacher, allow me to bring a unique perspective to my work. I’m passionate about children’s literature and am dedicated to helping children learn and grow through the power of storytelling.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
“Life is a story, and every page is a chance to inspire, educate, and entertain. Embrace your unique narrative and let your passion light up the world.” -DLS
