Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Sherry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began training in ballet at a young age of 5 in Kansas and continued pre-professional training at the Kansas City Ballet School. At the age of 16 I left home to continue professional ballet training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts on scholarship as a ballet major in the high school program. I went on to earn my BSOF from Indiana University where I trained as a ballet major on scholarship in the Jacobs School of Music and danced many principal roles with Indiana University Ballet Theatre. Professionally I danced with the Colorado Ballet, State Street Ballet, American Contemporary Ballet and City Ballet of Los Angeles and I continue to work as a freelance artist with contemporary ballet companies throughout Los Angeles. Pilates always played a major part in training as a ballet dancer and I was inspired to obtain my certification while studying at IU. I’ve taught pilates for 8 years and also continued my fitness education by pursuing my certification in Barre and Aerial Fitness. Ultimately, I found that a top-quality, multiple-methodology program was missing and wanted to create a well-rounded program.
I wanted to create something not solely focused on health and fitness but a program that revives how society (especially women) integrates fitness into daily life which led to creating The Ballet Bod. My roommate from training in North Carolina was Australian and we always stayed up late dreaming about the future and how we could enhance the world and collaborate together. It wasn’t until I was living in Los Angeles and Winnie in Sydney that we came up with The Ballet Bod app and brought our ideas to full fruition. We created a 12-week workout program of attainable 27-minute daily workouts for women looking to build strength, improve posture and feel leaner like a ballerina. The App is available online and can also be downloaded in the app store on apple and android. I do private coaching with in home clients of The Ballet Bod and host special live classes and events in Los Angeles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Working together but in different countries was a challenge for sure! Winnie and I are extremely dedicated though with working around the 19-hour time difference and have always helped each other through any challenges in the process of creating and launching the app.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Ballet Bod is unique in that it focuses on correct ballet technique movements within a quick high intensity interval workout. With both Winnie and I demonstrating throughout the 12-week program, the user gets to work out just as a professional dancer does and visually see the proper execution of ballet fused with fitness movement. The program is designed to increase skill level week by week – in cardio, flexibility and strength fitness. With my background in pilates, I specialize in proper alignment and I’m known to focus in on (gracefully) activating the precise muscle engagement. I am most proud of seeing The Ballet Bod available in the app store after so many years of dreaming and creating.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was constantly laughing and endlessly curious about the world. I took an interest in art, getting lost in books and ballet primarily. I loved spending time with friends but wanted more than anything to be dancing and training. I spent summers from the age of 12-18 away from home training at ballet schools around the country and making friends around the world. I wanted to see the world and learn as much about ballet as possible early on.
