Today we’d like to introduce you to Trang Duong.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I consider myself lucky to have had a natural passion for fashion since childhood. One unforgettable moment was when my mother bought me a set of fashion design toys. The joy and excitement I felt while holding a pen and adding colors to a page are memories that have stayed with me throughout my life. Discovering my passion is akin to finding a guiding light in the darkness. The spark ignites my enthusiasm and infuses every project with my heart and soul. This passion becomes a crucial driving force, carrying me through sleepless nights of meeting deadlines and motivating me to persist when the going gets tough.
I was born and raised in Viet Nam. In Vietnam, our nation is renowned for its craftsmanship. Growing up in a land with a rich heritage in handicraft arts like embroidery, weaving, and intricate finishes on handmade garments, I draw abundant inspiration for my designs as a designer.
My deep affection and enthusiasm for fashion led me to make a courageous choice at the age of 16 – to depart from my home country and journey to America, one of the foremost nations in the global fashion industry, in pursuit of my dreams.
With an extensive background working alongside renowned brands, I have honed my craft in designing exquisite evening gowns and mastering the art of draping. While my journey has been enriched by collaborations with prestigious labels, my ultimate aspiration is to carve my path and establish my own brand.
My love for fashion extends beyond the realm of aesthetics; it is a celebration of empowerment. Through my designs, I seek to empower women by crafting pieces that not only showcase their unique beauty but also embody strength and confidence. The fusion of contemporary styles, elegant evening gowns, and the intricate art of draping defines my design philosophy.
Having immersed myself in the dynamic landscape of women’s fashion, I have come to appreciate the transformative power of clothing. Each stitch, every fold, is an opportunity to create a statement that resonates with the essence of the modern woman. My journey as a designer is fueled by a desire to break barriers, inspire confidence, and redefine what it means to be elegantly empowered.
As I embark on the exciting path of establishing my own brand, I bring a wealth of experience, a love for innovation, and a commitment to uplifting women through fashion. Join me on this journey where each design tells a story of empowerment, where contemporary elegance meets timeless grace, and where fashion becomes a catalyst for self-expression and confidence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am currently on the ongoing journey of self-discovery and development as a designer. I consistently challenge myself to progress and explore new horizons each day. As a designer, I believe that stepping out of one’s comfort zone and discovering new aspects while preserving one’s unique style is the most challenging aspect of the creative process. Frequently, I find myself in a situation where I feel confined by my past accomplishments or too at ease working in a particular environment, despite being aware that numerous opportunities await me in the future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Due to my persistent endeavors, I’ve had the chance to engage in roles with renowned fashion brands and collaborate with notable designers on intriguing fashion projects. I’ve served as a fashion designer for prominent American brands like PACSUN, AMEREX GROUP LLC, SAVE KHAKI UNITED, RALPH LAUREN, NIKE, and THE TAILORY NEW YORK. This journey began when I was just 20 years old.
Through the evolution of my involvement with these fashion brands, my growth as a designer has been significant. I’ve actively contributed to extensive collections, particularly at Pacsun, where I collaborated with the Women Top Design Team, and the resulting collection was successfully marketed on the website. Additionally, my experience in crafting men’s clothing expanded while working with Save Khaki United and The Tailory New York.
I also had the privilege of participating in a Mentor Project with Nike and Ralph Lauren, achieving the title of winner in Ralph Lauren’s Mentor Project. Working closely with both Nike and Ralph Lauren, I received direct guidance on the envisioned collections. For Nike, I undertook an Upcycled project, transforming existing garments and providing fabrics into an entirely new collection. As the winner of Ralph Lauren’s Mentor Project, I designed a women’s ready-to-wear collection inspired by ballerinas. The victory came through the creation of two dresses – the first drew inspiration from classic Ralph Lauren designs, while the second was a recycled creation from a parachute previously used by an American soldier.
After dedicating five years to studying and advancing my career in LA, I decided to transition to New York, pursuing my ambition of becoming the fashion designer I aspired to be. The initial destination on my New York journey was The Tailory New York, where I engaged directly with numerous clients, gaining deeper insights into their preferences and requirements. Additionally, I had the opportunity to contribute directly to the design process for Shao’s New York Collection in collaboration with Anna Delvey & Kelly Cutrone. This proved to be an intriguing experience, marking my debut at NYFW, where the show garnered considerable attention from celebrities and the press.
Subsequently, I transitioned to employment with Amerex LLC, contributing my design expertise to the creation of new collections for Kate Spade. In this role, I actively engaged in the design process for various Kate Spade collections.
Last but not least, As a designer focusing on women’s fashion, my passion lies particularly in the creation of evening gowns and bridal designs. I collaborated with the renowned designer Hoang Hai, known for his expertise in evening gowns. The designs I crafted under his guidance were exclusively featured in significant Miss Universe competitions in Vietnam. Furthermore, my work with this designer allowed me the opportunity to collaborate with numerous supermodels and celebrities.
That is a summary of the experiences I have accumulated while working as a fashion designer.
