Inspiring Conversations with Jasmine Mines of Mines Law Firm PC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Mines.

Jasmine Mines

Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Jasmine Mines, a Black and Mexican woman raised in Altadena, California. My path to becoming a lawyer, the owner of The Mines Law Firm, wasn’t straightforward, but it was always driven by a desire to make a tangible difference.

Growing up, the realities of life hit early. My father spent more time in federal prison than as a free man, shaping my perspective on justice and fairness. Despite this, my mother’s unwavering strength and support laid the foundation for my resilience.

I initially ventured into health, earning both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. My focus was Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, and then Public Health-Biostatistics and Epidemiology. After five years in public health, I realized I could impact lives more directly in the legal field.

Balancing full-time work in healthcare, I attended law school at night, a challenging yet enriching period. In May 2019, I graduated with my Juris Doctorate Degree and passed the notoriously difficult California Bar Exam on my first try. This achievement wasn’t just a personal milestone; it was a testament to my tenacity and dedication.

Today, I practice Personal Injury and Family Law.  Each day is a blend of challenges and victories, but what remains constant is my commitment to justice and empathy for my clients. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to oneself, regardless of life’s hurdles. I believe in using my skills not just for legal battles but also for empowering others, especially those who feel voiceless.

My journey is ongoing, but every step has been a lesson in perseverance, faith, and the power of staying grounded in who you are.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to where I am today hasn’t been smooth – far from it. The struggles have been real and formative. Here are a few key challenges I’ve faced:

1. Balancing Education and Work: Juggling full-time work in the healthcare sector while attending law school at night was a relentless test of my stamina and time management skills. It required significant sacrifices in terms of social life and personal time.

2. Emotional Toll: The incarceration of my father brought a unique set of emotional challenges. It shaped my worldview and my approach to law but also added a layer of personal struggle that I had to work through.

3. Overcoming Heartbreak: On a more personal note, recovering from a heartbreak while maintaining a professional front was tough. It took me over a year to come to terms with it, with therapy being a crucial part of my healing process.

4. Professional Hurdles: As a solo practitioner, building a law firm from the ground up came with its own set of challenges. Establishing a client base, managing all aspects of the business, and building a reputation in a competitive field like law require resilience and adaptability.

5. Navigating Bias: Being a woman of color in the legal profession has its own set of challenges. I’ve faced situations where I had to prove my worth beyond my appearance and background.

These struggles, however, have been essential to my growth. They’ve taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of mental health. Each obstacle reinforced my commitment to my profession and to being a source of strength and guidance for my clients.
