Rising Stars: Meet Ren Zheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ren Zheng.

Ren Zheng

Hi Ren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Immersed in the digital age since I was a kid, I grew up watching various international films and getting to know the world through that tiny screen. Carrying my passion over the years, starting from 2017, when I stepped into filmmaking, from cinema theory to practical production, I’ve gained experience in well-rounded positions such as director, producer-writer, director of photography, editor, and colorist. These years of production experience have given me an in-depth understanding of the practical part of film production. While producing my projects, I’m also learning how to manage the budget in financial terms, participating in projects as editor and colorist, giving me insight on how to keep everything on track till the end.

In 2022, after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, I decided to jump from indie filmmaking into the real business world of the entertainment industry. Studying in the School of Cinematic Arts broadened my horizons. As an aspiring filmmaker, I’m surprised I’ve met like-minded people in my cohort who share creative technical skills and an ambitious, self-starting attitude. My future career path becomes much more explicit by building connections and exchanging ideas with alums, mentors, and people around me. I’m ready to take previous experiences as the foundation to become an entertainment entrepreneur and creative producer and learn how the industry works based on its sustainable and flourishing business ecosystem.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Through the years, film and television as an artistic medium also constantly served as an entertainment format in people’s lives. The accessibility of streaming platforms and the ubiquity of screens, from smartphones to high-definition film and television, have become persuasive elements in contemporary society, occupying a central role in the individual’s life around the globe.

Film and business are interwoven threads that form the intricate fabric of the entertainment industry. While the art of filmmaking is a creative endeavor, it is equally a commercial enterprise that demands strategic acumen and financial finesse. Business principles are essential in managing the financial aspects of film production. Producers and filmmakers must create detailed budgets, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure that the production remains within financial constraints. The fusion of film and business transcends the screen, encompassing the entire lifecycle of a film from conception to distribution. Producers navigate the complex landscape of financing, balancing artistic vision with market trends and crafting effective marketing strategies. Distributors ensure films reach their intended audiences, optimizing revenue streams. Behind the scenes, business professionals negotiate deals, manage budgets, and analyze market trends to sustain a thriving industry. In this dynamic synergy, the magic of storytelling converges with the pragmatism of commerce, creating a captivating cinematic experience that captivates hearts and sustains a thriving industry.

My goal has been clearer since I came to west coast and explored how the studio system operates, while the creative artists are the main production resource of the industry, the more practical burden has lied on distributors and merchandisers. How to yield the best return on investment is the next field I’m focusing right now.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I finished my last short film in May 2023, it tells a story about a bereaved medical examiner has her worldview challenged when a jade-filled body was presented to her. I get my inspiration from “The Drowned Giant”, it’s one episode from an adult animated anthology television series called “Love, death and robots” created by Tim Miller and streaming on Netflix. It’s impressive how fresh the visual experience that emerging technology can bring to the audience.

I’m still learning about led volume and motion capture skills that school just started offering from last semester. I just took the fundamental virtual production class, which taught students how to operate an unreal engine, and imitated one scene from a game-oriented film, Silent Hills. The interplay of game and film has provided to the audience a new medium of entertainment, and the virtual production technique is the key to this gate.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Working with different people definitely gives me varied aspects in terms of creativity and analysis. During the production, the creative talents focus on how to make the content, which requires diverging thinking and skillful filmmaking techniques. When the projects are also made for profits and not only for passion, it is crucial that creative executives give the directions on how this project will be made before the production crew come on board, so every film has their targeted audience, we’ll have a healthy ecosystem to provide more content to the market.
