Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bueno.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a 28-year-old esthetician licensed in 2016! I grew up in Simi Valley. I also had the privilege of growing up as the first-generation daughter of two immigrant parents. I started this journey at 21 years old with my tiny six-month-old precious son and a dot of loved ones who believed in me. I delivered pizza at the time, for a place I worked for since I was 15 years old! Delivering pizza by night and attending beauty school by day. I was gone most of the day, but I was very fortunate to have my mother, who helped me raise my son while I got through. After getting my license I worked from my parent’s house for about four years. Within that time I learned a lot and healed a lot. Having a child, and growing WITH your child, was extremely hard and tiring physically and emotionally.
Fast forward to the first few years of becoming an esthi, I met my (now) fiancé and his handsome son— my bonus son. We built the dream “at-home” salon and I worked from there. A few months passed and I received a letter in the mail (December) ordering for immediate SHUT DOWN because someone had reported me to the city/state board. Not only was this around the holidays extremely disheartening, it was during Covid, which had already caused so much stress within all of the beauty industry. For a bit, I wondered “Who did this?” “Did I do something to someone?” “Why would someone do this?” and “Who the heck has the time for that?” ….
What nobody knew was that in November I had driven by this super cute storefront that I had NEVER seen. It was so perfect. It looked like a tiny home. I called the number on the “available now” banner and quickly met up with the property owner. We briefly talked, and I politely declined. I mean, why would I want such an overhead and more stress?
I spent Christmas (which is also my son’s birthday) looking for places to immediately open. I never wanted to just jump into something and fail. I was so stressed but didn’t say a word. Who do I ask for help? I went back to my call log and called the woman I had spoken to back in November in regard to that cute little spot.
We texted back and forth. I sent her my resume that really didn’t have much on it, it was quite funny to even make it. I guess I asked her to believe in me without asking her to believe in me. And she did, with almost no hesitation. I signed my lease. January of 2021. Two weeks after my notice. I signed something that really changed my LIFE.
Was it meant to be? Did this happen for a reason? It certainly did. I currently have four AMAZING, hard-working, stunning, talented, unique gals that work at the shop. Two have their own business within my shop, and two I have taken on as team members! Going to work never feels it; it’s fun! We all share similar interests, and we thrive off of each other.
I have been in my studio for two years now. I have met wonderful people and launched a product line that I am extremely passionate about.
I’ve been asked if I still wonder who did that, and the answer is no. I am thankful for the opportunity that it brought me. If I knew who it was, I would personally thank them.
This is a reminder that not all bad things happen to you sometimes they happen FOR you. Thank you to my wonderful clients who have supported me endlessly.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been smooth, there has definitely been some challenges along the way. For example, learning and keeping up with techniques. Getting reported for working from home and having to find a storefront to open within DAYS. Working countless hours to build my clientele was also hard.
We’ve been impressed with JBUENOLASHSKIN, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed esthetician specializing in eyelash extensions and skin treatments. I am known for my lash sets that have kept me extremely busy these past years. I believe that I take care of my clients’ lashes which is what keeps them coming back. My clients also trust me with their skin and have seen some incredible life-changing results with my skin treatments. Something new that I have started that’s been a great turnout is my lash brand. I have a number one top-selling adhesive that has REALLY reached different states and it amazes me how other lash artists around the world trust my lash products, I am honored!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open to collaborating with other estheticians. It means the world to me when someone contacts me for help, and I am always on it! There is nothing more heartwarming than helping someone in the same industry! I truly believe that your first few years are crucial and there’s nothing better than finding a mentor who really wants you to do great!
I also want to add, I have 4 other AMAZING talented individuals here at my shop that I’ve added and I am so happy that I did. Originally I was going to have it as a lash studio ONLY but I have the best nail artist, an amazing brow artist, and TWO unique and talented lash artists! The perfect team and I am forever thankful.
