Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim and Kay Hine.
Since 1989, Tim and Kay have been hand selecting unique furnishings, antique Mexican doors, artifacts and decor accents. Their traditional Spanish furniture is made from a variety of native Mexican woods, including the hardwood Mesquite. Casa Mexicana Imports specializes in antique and old Mexican doors.
They started when they develop Real estate bringing in roofing tiles and floor tiles and Old doors from Mexico for projects they were constructing. When the housing market declined they decided to take a different route and asked themselves why not furnishings. Living in Southern California with its rich history and relationship with Mexico it was a natural way for them to go forward.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is an adventure especially when exploring and treasure hunting in Mexico.
We have found so many unique items. Religious artifacts, architectural elements, folk art, primitive rancho furnishings, movie posters and lobby cards and of course skilled craftsmen who make beautiful furnishings. Some of which we have kept for our own collection. In the past few years the people of Mexico have acquired a taste for their ancestral past and are holding on to these pieces, so it is more of difficult to find those type of items.
The cartel has also made it difficult to access the smaller villages where they have control and there is a danger in traveling to these areas not only for us but for our indigenous pickers as well.
We love the hunt and have been doing this close to 30 years and will keep doing this as long as possible.
Please tell us about Casa Mexicana Imports.
We have been importing furniture and artifacts from Mexico for the last 30 years. We specialize in collecting antique and vintage Mexican doors, which we re-purpose into furnishings, gates, headboards and other pieces.
We also offer custom hand crafted furnishing along with folk art and decor.
We strive to be different than any other furniture company. We only source from Mexico.
We do not go to the major furniture shows in North Carolina or Las Vegas because if someone else carries it we don’t want it…
We have earned best of service for the last 2 years with HOUZZ.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
For Tim, I would think it was his first adventure to Mexico on a treasure hunting exhibition at the age of 17.
Traveling on a reconditioned shrimp boat from Florida to Mexico searching for a lost wreck near the coast of Belize.
