Conversations with Cindy Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Lopez.

Cindy Lopez

Hi Cindy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started by just taking pictures of my friends and I in our streetwear. My love for sneakers, fashion, and artwork became the main focus of my photography being an LA native. The reaction I ended up getting to these types of photos then gave me the idea to start my own streetwear brand, Dystrict X.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been difficult overall to find inspiration and try to stand out, which was very discouraging. I kept taking pictures of random people and they started calling me the one-shot wonder which gave me hope to move forward. Then, in 2019, a good friend of mine asked me to be the photographer for their wedding. I was extremely nervous as I’d never shot a wedding before, but wanted the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and do something different. The results turned out amazing and that was a turning point that encouraged me to keep taking photos and keep trying new things.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to draw and paint which led me to discover my brand Dystrict X which is unisex streetwear clothing. I am known for my love for sneakers and capturing candid images of friends and family. Since starting my streetwear brand, this has really become an outlet for my creativity and photography.

How do you define success?
I define it as a roller coaster, meaning it’s not always easy to become successful and we have to go through the turmoil in order to see the light at the end of the tunnel. So to me, defining success is celebrating the wins as well as turning the missteps into lessons that ultimately redirects me into a better creator.
