Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Chiu.
Esther, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Neptune Tattoo is created with the intention to provide a safe tattoo space for all. At NeptuneTattoo, we value professionalism, compassion, and kindness. As the Chinese saying goes: “海納百川”, the ocean gains its vastness by opening itself to rivers from all directions. We would like to open our door to host creatives and aspiring artists with similar mindsets.
As tattoo artists, we noticed that there are many single-use items in the industry that are harmful to the environment. We would like to be the change the industry needs and choose biodegradable and compostable products. Some of the single-use products we use could break down and return to the earth within 1 to 60 months without leaving behind harmful residue.
As body art creators, we recognize the unique bond and trust between artists and clients. We are not only creating an art piece but also assisting our clients with having the experience they dream of or need when entering our shop. Sometimes we help them process grief, loss, fear, and other times we celebrate growth, achievements, and hope. In our practice, we are creating a safe space to value our clients’ bodies, visions, voices, and needs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Biggest challenge was to find a decent place for the shop and convince the landlord that we were a good fit for the spot. It’s because 1. We are a Tattoo business and 2. We are first-time tattoo shop owners.
Even though the tattoo industry has changed and evolved over the years, there is still a lot of stigma attached to this kind of business.
Therefore, while searching for a vacant storefront that fits our aesthetic and clientele (which is hip, upscale, and safe), we faced a lot of hesitations from landlords.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Hi, My name is Esther. I am a painter and professional tattoo artist based in Los Angeles. I’ve been tattooing since 2015.
I’m trained in a variety of styles. My current styles include micro realism tattoos with bright colors as well as large-scale body wrap tattoos in black ink.
My work is heavily influenced by the beauty of the natural world (ocean to be more specific) and the awe-inspiring use of color by artists such as Van Gogh and William Turner.
I build my practice based on Professionalism, Compassion and Love. I am dedicated to creating a clean, safe and respectful space for all bodies to get tattooed.
Many of my clients have told me that tattooing is like therapy to them. To me, it is an honor to share such an intimate experience with my clients, learning about the stories behind each tattoo and the conversation they might spark for the clients and the viewers.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I build my practice based on Professionalism, Compassion, and Love.
To me, a good tattoo is not just a tattoo, it’s a whole experience. So every step of the process matters, starting from the first impression (social media or in person) to the booking process, the consultation, the check-in, set up, stenciling and tattooing, aftercare, and follow-up/touch-up.
I take pride in treating my clients with professional care, compassion, and love throughout the whole process so people can have a one-of-a-kind Tattoo experience.
