Today we’d like to introduce you to Marine Galstyan.
Hi Marine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a TV & Film makeup artist based in Los Angeles, California. I was born in Yerevan, Armenia. My family moved to the U.S. in 2005, where I worked a variety of different jobs from restaurants to real estate. I quickly realized that my real passion was in makeup. As a child, I would go into my mother’s makeup drawer and create beauty from my own imagination. This was very rewarding, and I found my true calling in artistic endeavors. Being a makeup artist allows me the freedom to play and create at the same time.
I have worked with some of the biggest artists in the music, TV & Film industries. Some of the more notable entertainers I have worked with include: Quincy Brown, Black Eyed Peas, Clean Bandit, O.T. Genasis, Future, Sam Asghari, Peso Pluma, and Eladio Carrion.
I have also worked on the TV Show ‘Black Blood’ (Key Makeup) since 2017-current.
Starring: Eric Roberts, Antonio McKay, Erik Estrada
Feature Film ‘Dark Asset’ (Makeup Department Head) 2021
Starring: Byron Mann, Robert Patrick, Helana Mattson, Shani Rigsbee
Feature Film ‘Man in the Long Black Coat’ (Key Makeup) 2022
Starring: Mike Feuerstein, Neal McDonough Dermot Mulroney, Christopher Lloyd, Jake Busey
Pilot ‘Ramble On’ By Entourage Director Doug Ellin (Key Makeup) 2022
Starring: Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Kevin Connoli, Kevin Dilan, Zulay Henao, Bre-z, Mark Cuban
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Self-doubt. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you’re not good enough or that you don’t have what it takes to achieve your goals. But self-doubt is a liar. We are capable of great things.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in Film & TV Makeup.
I produce natural looks for events, glamorous looks for fashion or entertainment, and highly specific special effects looks for film and television.
I coordinate with the film director and lighting technicians to get briefed on character descriptions and shooting conditions. I sketch makeup looks for all actors, based on character descriptions and calculate the time required for makeup, and inform actors and the director in advance. I create special makeup effects using prosthetics and latex masks and ensure makeup style is consistent during the entire shooting of the film.
I am proud to be IATSE member at Local 706. After many years of working in silence, I finally made a noise by joining Local 706 in August of 2021.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
You can stand up for yourself and take everything that life throws at you. You’ll always figure things out even if it seems like an impossible challenge. As time passes, I have learned that I am stronger than I thought and I can face my challenges confidently.
