Daily Inspiration: Meet Di (Amber) Li

Today we’d like to introduce you to Di (Amber) Li.

Di(Amber) Li

Hi Di (Amber), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I graduated from Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York, with a major in studio art. My background was primarily in photography, but I yearned to tell deeper stories behind the images. This desire led me to venture into the realm of independent filmmaking. Often, I found myself wearing multiple hats – producing, directing, filming, editing, and handling sound, but what I truly relished was collaborating with diverse talents on projects, sharing the journey of creation. Consequently, I made the decision to pursue a degree in cinematography at Chapman University.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My parents always worry about not having any relatives or friends in the film industry, which is an unfamiliar territory for them. However, they still support me in pursuing what I want to do, and I believe that’s the most important thing. I’ve also realized that I still have a lot to learn in my field, so I started offering my assistance and learning on various film sets continuously. I’m truly grateful to all the people I’ve worked with and who have helped me along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Much like the film “Yi Yi” said, my aspiration is to show people that they can’t see by themselves. This is perhaps why I’m particularly drawn to science fiction themes. Crafting a convincingly immersive alternate world within the realm of cinema is a truly captivating endeavor.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
What I’ve learned from past projects is that the more you prepare, the better. It’s all about being ready well in advance. When I have a deep understanding of the original intent behind each shot, I remain composed and confident on set, even when unexpected issues arise that necessitate changes.
