Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Carson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Amanda On The Moon is what I go by for my music. I’ve been in bands since high school and started playing more on my own after college. That was 10+ years ago, so of course a lot has happened in that time. Lots of songs, a baby, a pandemic, relationship changes–now, I’m really feeling like I’m finding my footing again as a person and an artist.
Music has been an integral part of my whole life. I feel very grateful that my parents exposed me to so much music when I was growing up. My dad really passed on the joy of going to a record store in the hopes of finding something unexpected and exciting. His brain contains a seemingly never-ending catalogue of factoids about different musicians in a host of genres, definitely amplified by having been a radio DJ years ago. I was a DJ for a very short time as well at my college radio station, it was the best! There’s just nothing better than sharing music with other people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely been a windy road with many detours, and I think it will continue to be. But I have a different perspective on that than I used to. I have a much better understanding of myself and the detours I’ve taken than I did years ago. Balancing the need to make money to live with the desire to keep making and sharing your art is difficult on its own. But in the midst of any kind of intense emotional distress—whether it’s dealing with severe change, loss, or grief— it can feel impossible. Sometimes keeping your head down and moving through the next moment is all you can do, and I have more grace for the versions of myself that have needed to do that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I consider myself a folk singer and songwriter, I’ve always been really taken with lyric writing. I’m one of those people that typically latches on to someone’s words right away when it comes to listening to new music. Lately, I’ve been loving the feeling of being able to better harness all aspects of my voice–really utilizing restraint when a song calls for it and then unleashing more power when it’s the right time. I think I’m playing with the dynamics of my voice more than I have before and writing about things that I haven’t been able to tackle previously.
You can listen to my live EP called The Last Kids Sessions on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I really value connecting with people. I love house shows and events where you get to hear from the people who are listening as well as actually have conversations with the other artists playing. Hearing how other people relate to and connect with the songs is so important to me.
