Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Huang.
Hi Joshua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our bakery was born from the inspiration of our beloved German Shepherd, Pismo. When we welcomed Pismo into our family as a puppy, we eagerly provided him with a selection of store-bought treats, only to discover that his delicate tummy couldn’t tolerate any of them. Curious about the cause of his tummy upsets, we scrutinized the ingredients in these treats and were shocked to find unhealthy additives like preservatives (BHA and BHT, which are commonly found in dog treats), salt, oil, and sugar, and artificial coloring. It became clear why Pismo couldn’t stomach these less-than-healthy snacks.
Determined to find a solution, we embarked on a mission to create recipes using only the finest human-grade and organic ingredients, with no added salt or preservatives. To our delight, Pismo not only adored these treats but also enjoyed them without any tummy troubles. This success fueled our dream of sharing these wholesome treats with other furry companions, leading to the birth of Pup & Pop Bakeshop!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our journey has certainly been marked by its fair share of challenges.
One significant hurdle we’ve faced is navigating the stringent regulations set forth by the state of California, which boasts the most rigorous laws concerning pet food production, extending even to dog bakeries like ours. To operate within these boundaries, we had to secure a pet food production license and an organic food processor license. Moreover, because California uniquely mandates that all dog bakeries prepare their treats in a certified commercial kitchen, we found ourselves renting such a space on a weekly basis to bake our products which limits our turn around time and how much we can produce. The recurring costs associated with these licenses and regulations added to the competition from similar businesses that do not adhere to these rules have proven to be formidable obstacles for us especially with our concern for pet food safety and regulation.
Another ongoing challenge has been the pursuit of crafting canine-friendly versions of human-inspired desserts. Our commitment to quality and safety leads us to conduct extensive research to ensure that all our products are not only delicious but also entirely safe for our furry friends.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our specialty that sets us apart from other bakeries lies in crafting personalized cookies and cakes that help our pupstomers tailor treats to their pet’s individual preferences, dietary needs, and paw-ty themes. Your pet’s delight and well-being are at the heart of everything we do.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are multiple ways you can connect with us, collaborate with us, or show your support! First and foremost, our favorite method not only supports us but also benefits two of our cherished local rescues:
