Gizem Atalay

Hi Gizem, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for art has been a part of me since I could first grasp a pen and paper. As a child, I was quite introverted, and drawing became my silent language, my way of expressing thoughts and emotions that I struggled to put into words. It was my secret world, my sanctuary.

But my fascination with motion design took my creativity to a whole new level. I became obsessed with understanding how animation worked. To me, it was pure magic. I wanted to be the magician who could breathe life into still images, making them dance and tell stories through movement. The idea that I could create this enchantment was irresistible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Leaving Turkey at 17 to pursue my studies in art was a significant step for me, especially with the opposition I faced from my family to pursue a career in art. Coming to the US all by myself with English I had learned from study books, I had no idea what I was signing up for, and it was a massive culture shock.

Art has always held a special place in my heart, even though I battled self-doubt, amplified by the voices telling me I couldn’t make it as an artist. However, my perspective shifted after a heartfelt conversation with my grandfather, who had his own dreams of becoming a painter but was pressured into a different path due to family circumstances. His story became my wellspring of inspiration, and I was determined to succeed not only for myself but also as his granddaughter. I know he would have been immensely proud.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a versatile motion designer skilled in both 2D and 3D animation, as well as Photography, 3D modeling, and design. Certainly, as an artist and designer, my ultimate aspiration is to create those “aha moments” and stir emotions within individuals that they’ve never encountered before. Who doesn’t appreciate a captivating twist? I derive immense satisfaction from inspiring people to reflect, question, and briefly embrace the present moment, even if it’s just for a fleeting second.

Currently, I feel truly fortunate to be a part of the exceptional AV team at BOND, surrounded by remarkable talent and wonderful individuals. Their creativity and dedication are a constant source of inspiration, and I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such outstanding colleagues.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
In my view, every individual we encounter carries a valuable lesson, and this philosophy guides my interactions. I consider myself fortunate to have a circle of remarkable friends, some of whom are artists, yet all of them serve as a wellspring of inspiration in my life.

You know, I’ve come to believe that one of the most important things in connecting with people is simply not hesitating to be the first to say hi. It wasn’t easy for me, especially since I used to be quite shy. But these days, I make a conscious effort to push myself and reach out without hesitation. It’s all about breaking the ice and opening up to new connections.
