Conversations with Roman Anthony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roman Anthony.

Roman Anthony

Hi Roman, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi Voyage! My name is Roman Anthony, you’ve heard my story before but like many humans my story is continuous and changes occasionally. For those of you new to who I am – I’ll tell you. I am an actor, writer, and licensed cosmetologist in the states of California and Georgia (I actually attended Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy right off Fairfax and Melrose) and now in my second year of University as a Creative Writing & Journalism Major in London, UK. I’m a native Californian who grew up in a family with beauticians and barbers who had more talent than they probably knew. Singers and actors right before me. I started doing hair at the age of 11, and my professional acting career started in 2010. I am an artist and a businessperson, and as an artist today the two coincide.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. As an artist or even a business person, life will be challenging. Your income won’t be as steady as your friends, and gigs can sometimes be few and far between. As a business owner, sometimes profits aren’t seen until after a year. The primary mindset to have is that greatness is an eventuality if you work hard enough for it. Obstacles can be overcome so I don’t want you the reader to focus so much on the obstacle rather than the triumphs, and believe me, there will be a great deal of triumphs.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actor or entertainer as I also sing and dance from time to time. I’d say my specialty is acting. I have been known for series such as What’s The Function & No Shade and films such as Lady Peacock on Logo/Amazon Prime & Here TV; but, today I’m probably known as the character Alex in Jahmar Hill’s BET+ film Sisters. I play opposite rapper Lil Mama as the sound voice of reason and the best part about it is that I also was a hairstylist for and in the film. I was able to really do the actresses hair in my chair. I’d like to think I am setting some sort of record for being a hairstylist in four films as well as an actor in those films. I am also possibly known for being the Department Head Hairstylist on the film ‘The In-Law Gang’ by Jessie Jalee which premiered in select theatres and is now on Amazon Prime. I cameo’d in that film as a PA in a cooking scene. I currently have two more films in post-production and don’t plan on slowing down. I’m most proud of my resilience. I’ve gotten many no’s- I’ve been told I’m “too black”, and “not black enough” or “too gay” or “not gay enough” for a role. So my resilience in chasing a career I know I was born to do is what I am most proud of. What sets me apart is probably my determination and personal morals. I really follow a blueprint of my favourite stars from the Hollywood Glamour era.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is waking up and being happy. Loving what I do and having something to strive for. I don’t worry about what someone else is doing or saying. It’s about how I feel when I look in the mirror.
