Today we’d like to introduce you to Vian Borchert.
Hi Vian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing art when I was very young. Art for me was always there since the beginning. I was born into an art household where my family has artistic lineage. Thus, I was born with a natural talent and an artistic gift. I’ve always liked as a child retreating into my own little art world by sitting at my desk to draw and paint letting my imagination fly as high as it can possibly go. In this, I was always a dreamer, looking up at the clouds and making shapes and wondering about life, nature, and how marvelous our beautiful earth is. Throughout my school, my teachers noticed my talent and harnessed and directed me in the arts. I was always encouraged to enter into shows and represent my school in the art category. I won awards as a child and people who saw my talent encouraged me to be an artist. My parents also were vital in guiding me in the art field. Hence, I pursued an art path and went to art school. I am a graduate and “Notable Alumni” from Corcoran College of Art & Design George Washington University.
After graduation, I traveled and met artists from all over the globe and collaborated with them in exhibitions and fun art projects. Then, I returned to the US. Early on, I got sidetracked and ended up in a financial job and realized after a couple of years that I must go back to fine arts, and the rest is history. I started creating one painting after another and entering shows and exhibitions nationally and internationally along with teaching fine art classes to adults. I have been in the art business for many years. Of course, there are lots of ups and downs within this artistic path. Yet, my talent and love for art has taken me to new heights and new venues I wouldn’t have even thought about if I chose any other profession.
Currently, I exhibit in museums and key galleries in major cities from LA, NYC, London, DC, and others. I am an established artist who is internationally collected and covered vastly in both national and international publications. In June, my artwork was on display on a huge billboard in NYC’s Times Square on Broadway – a great accomplishment to see in my lifetime. I feel grateful for every opportunity I have been given and that came my way throughout this journey. My artwork can be acquired and is available at “1stDibs” and “Artsy” the world’s leading marketplaces with auctions. “1stDibs” link for my available paintings: https://www.1stdibs.com/creators/vian-borchert/art/. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road of an artist is no bed of roses. You can say the road has been bumpy, yet interesting. There have definitely been obstacles and struggles along the way such as wondering when will my career take off? When will people recognize my talent? There have been many questions and doubts of how I will accomplish this and that along dealing with rejection as well. Being an artist is not for the faint-hearted. I had to almost put on steel armor metaphorically speaking to stay resilient in the difficult art world as I navigated and moved forward. Lots of patience, lots of time, and lots of artwork creation plus lots of hard work and sleepless nights got me to where I am at now.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an abstract expressionist artist. I have been creating expressionist paintings for many years. My paintings are mainly acrylic on canvas and depict the natural world through my abstract minimal and painterly vision. My specialty is works that have lots of blues in it. Thus, abstract seascapes and skyscapes full of clouds is what I love to do. I am known for my blue abstract work that covers elements of water and sky such as waterscapes that embody a sense of nostalgia of being on a sea voyage and taking in the breeze and atmosphere of life by the sea. My artwork reflects who I am, my persona, my identity, my sense of belonging, and a love for the things that I can dream about such as sunsets, sunrises, atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes. I have created thousands of paintings throughout my art career and a huge number of my work has been sold and is collected by art collectors and art lovers from all over the world along with having work acquired by corporations, hospitals, and world embassies.
I am most proud and grateful that people from all walks of life and different backgrounds love my work. I feel my artwork is a form of a universal language connecting and communicating to all through the visual world that is transmitted onto the canvas. I am grateful and delighted to see that my art has changed lives for the better – that a work of art can actually move emotions and make people want to better themselves, enjoy life and its endless beauty. My artwork opens the eyes so to speak and makes the viewers connect to a higher cognitive realm towards enlightenment along with creating a sense of “joie de vivre”. My art is unique, innovative, and creative. I am a pioneer in my singular abstract vision which has been influential in the development of the current art trends and the direction of where contemporary abstract and modern art is heading. My work delivers a slice of magic that is me in everything I create. You know a “Vian Borchert” piece when you see one. It grabs you differently because there is magic, love, and a personal touch in everything I do. People see it right away, and that is where the success in art lies.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe the majority of my success has been accomplished from absolute hard work, lots of sleepless nights, grinding, producing, creating artwork, dealing with both difficult people who don’t give one chances; and on the other hand, coming across those who appreciate and love your vision. The success wouldn’t have manifested if I hadn’t been very disciplined in creating the work and pursuing my art career. There were opportunities where I would say, yes luck did play a role in them – they were unreal and almost out-of-this-world experience. Yet, if I hadn’t created a huge body of cohesive work and had the proper education and years of professional experience, good luck and great opportunities waiting for one around the corner wouldn’t have occurred if I wasn’t ready.
In this, I feel everything that has happened to me thus far: the open doors, the closed doors, the nice people who give you a break, the mean ones who shut you down -> all contributed and played a role in my life and my business. Hence, my destined life unravels and reveals itself as I go forward within the path. One thing though I can attest that circles back to what you call luck or universal love is that the universe sees what you are up to, if you are good, good comes back to you in different forms. So, keep those random acts of kindness and goodness circulating and going around.
