Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan D’Auria.
Hi Alan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a musician from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I started playing the drums at the age of three or maybe before, my father, Oscar D’Auria, is a known drummer, producer and teacher, he played and recorded with artists like Julio Iglesias, Sandro, Marco Antonio Solis, Armando Manzanero.
I grew up with a drum kit next to my room and discovered at an early age how much I liked the drums. I studied with my father for many years. Sometimes it was very difficult, you know, it is your father who is now your teacher. He taught me and also influenced me to listen to very good music since I was little.
The decision to be a professional drummer was not easy, I had to go my own way, that’s when I traveled to the USA for the first time at the age of 20 to embark for 6 months as a drummer on an NCL company cruise. Returning to Buenos Aires from that trip was when I realized that music was really my thing beyond coming from a family of musicians.
I started working as a session musician in some local bands and over the years I reached renowned artists and played in the most important theaters in Argentina, such as the Gran Rex, Teatro Astral, Gran Rivadavia and TV studios such as the Susana Gimenez Live Talk Show.
Along the way I met incredible people and musicians, I recorded a live tango album, formed my Jazz quartet, collaborated on studio albums and toured with many artists and bands, I was part of an adaptation of the broadway show “Dear Evan Hansen” in Buenos Aires.
In 2022 I was summoned as an orchestra musician to perform on the largest cruise ship in the world, the “Wonder Of The Seas”, right after that beautiful experience came the invitation from REMO, the leading American company in drumheads to participate and perform at the NAMM show, the largest music product trade show in the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely being an artist is one of the most risky vocations and professions in the world. It has not been an easy road at all. I think the biggest fight is always with yourself. I mean, you have a dream, you have a passion, that’s what makes you feel alive and motivated. But at the same time, your mind can always be your enemy, making you think of fears and generating insecurities. This is when the first and most important thing has to happen. You just need to embrace your dreams, your passion, and I can assure you that this is stronger than any fear that can shake you. The clearer your vision, the better things will flow. Embrace your passions and use that fear as a fuel. You will be unstoppable!!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a session drummer, which means being able to quickly and efficiently solve musical situations in many different styles. Throughout this last decade I have collaborated with many artists and genres from Pop, Rock, R&B and Funk. My duties as a session drummer range from filling in for shows, going on tours and even recording.
I also lead my own Jazz and Tango projects where I let my artist feel free to create and compose.
As a session drummer, sight reading is one of my specialties. Without a doubt sight reading has opened many doors.
What kind of changes do you expect in the next 5 to 10 years?
The future of the music industry is difficult to predict, as it constantly evolves and adapts to new technologies and trends. However, streaming, artificial intelligence, the rise of independent artists, social media, and live music will all play important roles in shaping the industry in the coming years.
In respect to me, I want to continue doing what I do but above all to be surrounded by people who nourish me musically and humanly, I think the rest will happen by itself.
