Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Chavez.
Hi Angel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Started interviews with artists in 2019 and realized independent artists don’t get opportunities to develop or perform besides small bars. The other problem is artists under age can’t go perform at bars or their fans can’t see them perform.
July 2022 hosted the first Desert Underground music festival in Coachella, CA. We had 400 people show up to support the art and music.
On my personal YouTube channel (Angel Chavez), I’ve been covering the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, helping people go experience the best music and arts festival in the world. We are inspired by Coachella because the artists from this area hope to one day play Coachella but how can they ever be invited if no one gives them a chance to perform?
Desert Underground music festival is an experience in person but we also have a digital strategy. We have the Desert Underground YouTube channel posting performances from the show as well as Live Recording music videos and music videos. We are a combination of Tiny Desk, Lyrical Lemonade and Coachella. We have a focus on Mexican regional music & hiphop but we are open to all genres. Our YouTube has over 100 music videos and a documentary that was featured in the Official Latino Film Festival.
Since last July, we’ve hosted seven shows and had over 80 artists perform at our shows. Thousands of people showing up to the different shows.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We don’t have enough resources to put out the videos fast enough for distribution and we have lost money at almost every show because we can’t find sponsors. We are doing this with our money and it’s hard to keep the shows more consistent. We have hundreds of artists messaging daily about performing at Desert Underground.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been doing YouTube since 2015 and gathered over 6 million views on my main channel.
Podcast just reached 154 episodes and I’ve had the privilege to interview artist, creator and three mayors from Indio, Coachella and a mayor from a town in Mexico.
I’ve done video work for Universal Music Latino at the Latin Grammy After, LAMAS After and Latin Billboard After in Vegas.
In 2022, I was featured on the official Coachella livestream. The director of the Coachella 20 Years in the Desert Documentary Chris Perkel came to my house to interview me.
My film “Desert Underground” documentary was featured on a short film festival in December 2022.
The Desert Sun newspaper features our Desert Underground story on the cover in February of 2023.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My brother Octavio Chavez is the current president of a town in Mexico called Lagunillas, Michoacán. He’s started a tile business for 20 years here in the United States and went back to help the town we came from. It’s always an inspiration to see his work ethic.
I was born in Mexico and came here at the age of nine.
Danny Hastings is a director who opened a lot of doors to work with big-name companies and his film festival featured our film. He’s a big reason to think bigger.
Coaches in high school and college when I played football as an offensive linemen have shaped me up to work hard and keep showing up.
My parents for all the sacrifices they made to give us a better life.
