Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Moreau.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a photographer specializing in portraits. I was born in Australia, grew up in France, and have lived in Los Angeles for five years (6 in September !) I have been taking photos for a while now, starting during my teenage years, as a hobby, and always dreamed to make it my career. I dropped out of school and had many jobs before starting to take pictures on a professional level.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha, big no and you know what, I think it’s better. Many things were challenging, but let’s name the main ones. I would say that first, I chose to shoot film, as I hate spending a lot of time on my computer, as well as I identify more with grain and imperfection vs “clean images” and choosing this media is very expensive and as well not predictable, I had a lot of bad surprises (I develop at home) but with time you learn so mistakes are now becoming rare or inexistent, the film tho still very pricey! I’m starting to shoot digital as well. The other one I’m thinking of is social media, how many times photographers/artist are thinking of ending their careers or passion because of lack of visibility, or likes, this one is a struggle. It’s important to remind yourself that you are doing it first for yourself, one of my friends recently said, “The beauty in art does not lie in its perfection or commercial value, but in its potency as a human’s interpretation and expression of their experience and interaction with the world around them” Brad Oberhofer.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So as I said earlier, I’m a photographer specializing in portrait photography, I’m first known for being French Laura haha. I’m secondly known for being the photographer of independent musicians in LA, and I’m beyond proud of that. What sets me apart from others is probably that I go crazy in my colors, it’s known I experiment a lot “chemically” (yes the chemicals I develop with) but I’m super down to be simple as well. I don’t know two photographers that do the same thing anyway, we all have a different vision of the world, that’s what is beautiful with art.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
So many, I would first say my friend Jean Felzine; he is the first musician who hired me for his promo pictures that I sold to Sony Music before moving to the U.S.A. after, impossible to not mention Brian Brooks, who took me under his wings for a year in San Francisco, it’s hard to be that far away from him I owe him many things, he was the best mentor I could have a dream for. Larry Niehues, IMPOSSIBLE to not mention Larry, Larry has been supporting me since we met, and it’s an honor as I consider Larry one of my favorite photographers and brother from another mother. Ecoute Cherie alias David and Simon, who made me part of 2 numbers of their magazine called Leaf Magazine. Pearl & the Oysters, my muses and friends that are always here for me and my favorite models to shoot, and finally my husband Clem that never stopped supporting me. (And all the friends, haha This is the question where I have so many people to thank but I want to name a few more: Sam Hellman, Lisa Boostani, Lou Rebecca, Christophe, Shags, James, Brittany, Dalton, Marina TWH)
