Meet Angela Corey of Bona Fide Beauty in Cypress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Corey.

Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2015, my husband and I were a typical two-income household with two teenage boys living with us and things were “ok”.

Since we both had full-time jobs, we were just ok living paycheck to paycheck since we always thought as long we have each other we don’t need much…until the bills piled up and my husband, being an independent contractor, wasn’t doing as well as he used to, I had to find a way to make extra income without sacrificing my current job.

I’ve always loved the beauty industry and I already freelanced as makeup and hair artist but that’s not consistent enough but it made me happy so I knew as long as I am using my hands to create I will always have an outlet for creativity. Although my full-time job was stable, it lacked creativity. My left side of the brain is doing technical work but my right-side screams for artistry work. Like most people, you spend your last few minutes before bed on social media and that’s when I came across a video of a permanent makeup artist performing the art of “microblading” on a client of hers and that was it! I was so intrigued and obsessed I immediately research more videos and read articles and finally decided it’s what I wanted to do so I talked my husband into investing in my training and the rest is history.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road can be boring, and trust me, I had lots of fun on this journey, so far.

After I got my certification, I started to find live models to practice right away, I’m blessed to have a mother and 3 sisters that believed in me and allowed me to tattoo their faces. Then I would reach out to friends that I know won’t hate me if I messed up, luckily there weren’t any mistakes that were not fixable. I started with doing house call, just driving from one side of town to the other on the weekends so I really don’t have days off, but I didn’t mind that, I love what I do. I had to sacrifice a lot of family time and social functions, even though I felt guilty, my supportive family didn’t guilt trip me at all. I started with a client or two on the weekends and I started to build my portfolio which is very slowly but I was determined to make something of myself, call it a midlife crisis if you must, but for someone with just a high school education like me there wasn’t a lot of options. Eventually, I’ve found a salon that would rent out the esthetician room to use with my clientele, but you know where there’s a salon there’s dramas. Just conflicts of interest, time, and stealing clients. I had to get my own studio and I found it inside Sola Salon Studios, exactly what I needed to get my business going. There will be other obstacles as long as I’m traveling this road, but that’ll just make my life a little more exciting.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bona Fide Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m the owner/artist of Bona Fide Beauty.

I specialize in creation and correction of eyebrow tattoo. The technique is called “microblading” which creates the most natural looking eyebrows using a manual hand tool and not by machine. This special technique creates hair-like tattooed strokes to simulate your own.

It is a meticulous process that takes great care and precision for the most natural looking eyebrows, no more sharpie brows!

My clients will tell you that they came to me for that reason, to look like they were born with it. I’m proud to have many positive reviews and the proof is in the referrals. I can say that I’m known for my pain-free process, I’m likable, but more importantly for my artistry. I’m not just a technician, every client gets a custom design, they are my canvas and I’m the artist. I plan to meet and exceed their expectations. I’m registered, insured, certified, and my facility is always up to date with my city’s guidelines and regulations. My consultation is always free and if you’re not comfortable with me I won’t feel comfortable browtifying you.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
I’ve been microblading since 2015 and although this kept me busy, I’m getting ready to offer additional services such as eyeliner and lash line enhancement by the beginning of 2018. Besides that, I’m also going to be certified as a trainer so I can pass on the skill sets that I’ve learned along the way so new technicians can learn the safest and best way to proceed as a professional, it is up to them to become an artist.

Trends are ever changing so to be on top, you must re-educate and continue new education, hone your skill sets and develop yourself.

I’ve been microblading since 2015 and I absolutely love it. Now I’m very excited to announce that I have earned 2 more certifications and I’m getting ready to offer additional services at the beginning of 2018.
