Today we’d like to introduce you to Rae.
Hi Rae, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in South Florida to musical parents and have been singing since before I could read. I used to gig at this cafe by my house every single week for about three years. After graduating high school, I got accepted to Florida State University College of music for vocal performance and graduated in 2016. I moved to Los Angeles in the Fall of 2017 and was incredibly broke sleeping on a blow-up mattress in some moldy apartment in Northridge. When I first moved here I would fill up my days doing as many sessions as humanly possible while binging on fast food, alcohol, and all other types of “extra curricular activities.” Through the support of many people I met along the way, paired with an unstoppable work ethic, I started to grow little by little. I stopped overindulging on substances that weren’t for my greatest good and started working my ass off even harder. By 2019, I had started a band called rosecoloredworld with Addison Scott. After gaining some momentum, we were forced to not play live due to the pandemic in 2020.
After not playing for over 1.5 years, we landed a fall residency at Fright Fest at Six Flags in 2021. In 60 days, our band had played 100 sets together. Moving into 2022, we played anywhere we possibly could in the LA area from the Viper Room to underground shows all over town and then in November headlining and SELLING OUT the Troubadour. We toured for a few weeks in the summer from LA to New Orleans connecting with rock fans across the county. Fast forward to now, we just got signed to Sound Talent Group (STG) by Jake Zimmerman and are now about to play our first rock festival this summer and will be back on tour late summer/early fall.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road to say the least. My parents split when I was a baby and we never had a lot of money. The move to Los Angeles really sounded like a pipe dream to them. I might as well told them I was moving to mars. I definitely became codependent on chemicals from all of the stress, anxiety, and pain I felt. I was far from my family and had just gone through two people in my life passing from drug overdoses, as well are both of my grandparents passing the first year I moved here. That level of grief really catapulted me into depression and although most saw me with a smile on my face, I was dealing with a lot of pain. Breaking free of those habits and addiction cycle ultimately freed me. It allowed me to learn more about higher levels of thinking, meditation, and movement. I fully attribute most of my success to surrendering to that and working hard.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I sing, write, and produce in a rock band called rosecoloredworld. Since I was young, words and lyrics always came very natural to me as a way to express myself. There really is nothing more liberating than watching the pen touch the page and seeing a song be birthed into the world from nothing. I love spending hours carefully crafting a song. It’s strange because many times, I feel I really just get out of the way and allow to songs to come through.
Also, in the pandemic, I started another project called Rebel Hearts Club alongside Addison Scott and Dave Green, originally from the rock band, The Filthy Souls. In the last six months, we have seen success getting songs placed in commercials as well as on MTV.
I am most proud of my tenacity and drive to continue to create in this world despite the cards I was dealt. I truly want to inspire others and tell them that by showing up authentically, you can do anything you put your mind to,
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people probably don’t know that I literally journal every single morning. Julia Cameron’s book, “The Artist’s Way” inspired me to take my morning pages seriously. There’s something about getting the creative juices flowing at the start of the day that gives me the inspiration to be present in my art and life.
