Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Amburgey.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was inspired by my aunt who was a hairstylist at the time. I loved the idea of creating art with hair. I was always that friend who would offer to style someone’s hair for fun events. I quickly realized that I could do something that I’m passionate about every day, make new connections with people, help them feel beautiful and earn a living from it!
I enrolled in beauty school July of 2018 while I was working full-time at a brewery. I graduated a year later and became licensed in September 2019. I assisted a salon in La Crescenta, CA for about a year through the pandemic (when we were actually open). In my free time, I turned to a ton of online education, taking on every single ounce of information that my brain would allow me to absorb. I also purchased a mannequin head from Germany and began re-practicing updo styling. After an immense amount of positive feedback from the hairdos, I knew that I was finally on the right path.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If you were asking my younger self back in 2014 this question, she would’ve said that it was most definitely a tough road. Prior to beauty school, I was enrolled in medical school to become an ultrasound technician which of course didn’t last. I graduated but was never licensed because I knew in my heart I still wanted to be a stylist. In both careers, I was working full-time while going through school, which is extremely physically and mentally draining.
Now looking back, I realize I needed to go through all of that in order to shape me into where I am today. I have no regrets about the struggles along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in custom “lived in” color, dimensional brunettes, blonding & event styling. I love creating beautiful melted blends that look effortless, allow you to feel natural and most like yourself. Color is hands down my favorite! When it comes to styling, I enjoy creating textured styles with curls, twists and braids.
I am most proud of how much I have grown especially since entering the beauty industry. It can be intimidating to anyone new: especially in the world of social media today. My only advice is that “as long as you never stop learning you will always continue to grow in your craft.”
I think what sets me apart from others is that I have a great passion for what I do, love to create meaningful connections with others, a willingness to learn, and a determination to be better than I was yesterday.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
