Rising Stars: Meet Delilah Bisase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delilah Bisase.

Hi Delilah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a plant-based dietitian, prenatal nutrition expert, and reiki energy healer. As a registered dietitian, I provide holistic nutrition support for vegan and vegetarian pregnancies. Before getting to this point I was in a few different roles, however they were all health and wellness related.

I’ve always enjoyed working with people, so when I first got to college I explored non-profit work and hospitality, but neither of those fields turned out to be a good fit for me. It wasn’t until I was in my junior year that I changed my major to nutrition. Yea, so essentially the year before graduating I decided to pretty much start all over again.

I should also point out that, as of 2020, only 3% of dietitians are Black. The dietetics field is a field that is majority White (80%) and majority female (92%). I recall only one other Black student in my graduating class. I was also the only Black intern during my dietetic internship. In addition to navigating the entrepreneur world, I’ve also had to navigate the challenges that come along with being one of few (or the only) Black people in predominantly White spaces.

Fast forward many years, I got my college degree and completed my 1600-hour clinical training just like every RD out there. However, I quickly became disenchanted with the conventional, clinical approach to nutrition and overall health because it’s very narrowly focused and it doesn’t take into account the whole person. On the outside, everything looked picture perfect, but on the inside my work was so unfulfilling but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. And then Reiki entered my life. I was searching for something to make my services whole because I felt like I was under-delivering to my clients. Interestingly, I heard about Reiki a few years before but completely brushed it off. The second time it came around it literally just popped in my head. I had a message come to me during meditation and it was simply “nutrition and chakras”. By the way, Reiki and chakras stem from two totally different systems, but that message set me on the path to seeking out Reiki.

I’ve learned that physical health and spiritual health are inseparable from one another. Whatever is going on with you at the energetic level will undoubtedly manifest itself at the physical level either in the form of good health or disease. Focusing on the food part only will only take care of part of you, but by incorporating the energy healing you will be taking care of the whole you.

I’ve always had a deep fascination with prenatal nutrition and overall prenatal health. I can’t pinpoint any specific point, but anytime I would ever learn something about prenatal health it would just immediately stick to my memory. And that’s a big deal considering I have a fairly short attention span and get bored easily. However, when it comes to combining vegan or vegetarian lifestyle with pregnancy, there is little to no support out there. Many people view it as outright dangerous or irresponsible. Frankly, I let the fear of backlash get the best of me until I finally decided f**k that, I’m going to follow my passion! After tons of self-work to kick imposter syndrome to the curb, I finally answered the call to work as a prenatal dietitian, specializing in vegan and vegetarian pregnancies.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The solopreneur route is definitely one where you have to walk by faith and not by sight! I struggled so much to get clients. I’m not social media famous, and frankly, I have a love-hate relationship with social media. So I had a hard time getting the hang of producing popular content and promoting myself online. So much money was going out, but not a lot was coming in. I really had to keep the faith and stay committed. The key to this is accepting that your path will not look like anyone else’s, so stop wasting your time comparing your business to others. The other major key is to trust that everything will fall into place despite the fact that you have no idea how it will happen, just know that it will.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a plant-based dietitian, prenatal nutrition expert, and reiki energy healer. As a registered dietitian, I provide holistic nutrition support for vegan and vegetarian pregnancies. What a lot of people don’t realize is that a big, very big, part of nutrition is behavior change. It’s not enough to simply know about healthy eating, but you have to have the underlying motivation to change your daily habits. Behavior change has nothing to do with the foods you eat, it’s all about habits and mindset.

But here’s where it gets interesting. Energetic imbalances are at the root of your habits and mindset. I always say this, whatever is going on with you at the energetic level will undoubtedly manifest itself at the physical level either in the form of good health or disease.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just teach my clients about what foods to eat, I also bring to light (and help heal) the underlying energetic issues that are keeping them from being their best, healthiest self; that’s where the Reiki comes in. I also use an anti-diet, intuitive eating approach with my clients because diet culture is absolutely ridiculous and got very messed up.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
LA is the land of everything! Whatever your niche is, you can find it here. And if your niche isn’t here, you can just create it. I saw something funny on Overheard LA that said people come to LA with dreams and leave with a dream journal. That line is both hilarious and accurate. Just like any other major city, it can be brutal and dream-crushing at times. And if you don’t prioritize surrounding yourself with a solid tribe, it’s easy to get swept away.
