Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Lin.
Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a pre-kindergarten teacher at a private school for over a decade and throughout that time, multiple parents would always say that it was so nice to have a positive male teacher in their child’s life at such a young age. They would always ask me if I could watch them at night or over the weekend, assist with birthday parties, shadow their child at school or camp, teach sports, or tutor. Eventually, I had a light bulb moment chatting with some friends that I should start an agency that provides families with positive male role models. So that evening, I started Mannies of LA, one of the first male nanny agencies in the country.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were many bumps in the road and there still are. There’s still this negative perception of males working in childcare, which is unfortunate. One of our goals is to break that negative perception down and to show families that male nannies can do the same thing as female nannies.
Also it was also hard getting your name out there, especially in Los Angles where it’s very saturated with nanny agencies.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mannies of L.A. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are the premiere manny agency in the country. We do also place nannies but 90% of our placements are male nannies! We believe in the importance of providing young children with a positive male role model. So many children grow up with positive female role models such as nannies, babysitters, moms, teachers, and housekeepers but there’s not a balance of positive male role models. All children need a balance of both positive male and female role models.
I’m proud that we have placed hundreds of mannies and have made a huge difference in a lot of families’ lives.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
There’s so much opportunity and that Los Angeles is city open to male nannies!
With wealth and money, comes attitudes. Sometimes we have to deal with very difficult clients. We just remember that we’re doing it for the kids and if we can place one male nanny with a child that needs it, it’s all worth it.
