Life & Work with Moon Yecca

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moon Yecca. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Moon Yecca started out performing in her local Boys and Girls Club of LA Harbor in the city of San Pedro at monthly Art Galleries for the youth of the town to show off their talents. Producer/Emcee Rob Lacey, better known as “Definite” of Manifest Recordings discovered and nurtured her vocal and writing talents. At the age of 12, she began to develop into the all-around artist she is known as today. She developed a sort of poetic style of writing and she finally found a blend of sound with her love for old-school R&B, Neo-Soul, and Hip Hop. Her newest music is a direct reflection of her cultural background and experience creating music for 2 decades. She considers herself part of the Latinx movement, and firmly embraces her Chicano culture and tries to incorporate that with her music. Beginning a more aggressive approach to releasing music when she started with HRDRV online label, the opportunities have become endless, and there is no door she can’t unlock; she has all the keys!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been 20 years that I have been making my own music. There were a lot of unruly characters, a lot of flaky people, and a lot of no’s up until the more recent years. There would be situations where men (i.e., rappers, producers) were more interested in my physical business rather than the music but would try and bribe me into dealings based around the music. I never bite on that bait, so the opportunities would cease before they started. I also had a lot of people say they want to work with me but never follow through. My music career to a long hold when I got pregnant with my first son when I was 20. My priorities shifted, obviously and for the next eight years, my main focus was my two boys.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an all-around creative. I truly believe that any person who has lived their life in the arts, be it performing, writing, producing, painting, etc. we are never limited. We have the minds to create, which means we can have a plethora of avenues to do so. I myself sing, write, rap, paint, and photographs. My recent popularity has generated from my music, which I would say is a good blend of my personality, my inspirations, and my goals. I am proud of my culture and where I come from and proud of my heritage. I think it’s important for me to dedicate some of my work to those aspects of my life. The car show circuit has always shown me so much love, so naturally, I make music that this particular audience can appreciate. However, I have a unique sound with the rest of my music. 90’s R&B vibes meet West Coast meets Soul!

Of all things I am most proud of, the main notion that I want people to know is that I never gave up on music. I may have taken hiatus’, I may have taken detours in life, but I always ended up back on the road toward music.

I am an artist and a singer yes… but I am just another homegirl with a dream. I am just another mother trying to provide and teach her sons to never give up. I am a humble woman God, and although I was given unique talents that allow me to sing to the world, I will never forget where I came from, who showed up for me, and who never left.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in prayer, and I believe in karma. I try to pray every day to Thank God for all that He has done in my life, all that He is currently doing in my life, and all that He will do in my life. But there also applies the rule of Karma, you get what you give in this world. There’s been moments of reflection I have had where I thought to myself, ‘yep, I had that one coming,’ which is why now, as my name starts to buzz a little more, I try to remember that it all comes back. I never want to make anyone feel like I treated them less than.

God has blessed my spirit to not give up on music after such a long time. God has given me opportunities He thought I was ready for or wanted me to learn a lesson from. I am grateful for both.
