Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Chen.
Hi Jeff, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Cinema plays a big part in my childhood. Stories of adventures have always fascinated me. I remember watching Harry Potter over and over. Even as a kid, I remember that I was addicted to the feeling after watching a movie: pure joy from an adventurous ride. I often feel lonely growing up, probably because I am an only child. But I never feel lonely after watching a movie. Instead, I feel seen and heard. Around 6th grade, I decided that I want to be an actor. I applied for College in the US and I moved to LA afterward. I believe in pursuing the craft of acting. I’ve spent years studying and I don’t think I will ever stop learning. Getting to tell a story with body and voice is truly a blessing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. But I definitely had some beginner’s luck. I am fortunate enough to work with some amazing directors even though I was super green. There are struggles here and there and that’s what makes this pursuit meaningful. One of the challenges was to get get my artist’s visa to work in LA. I had a great legal team, shoutout to my lawyer Kelly Decsy and my case manager Anna Tabidze at D’Alessio Law Firm, but I still had a tremendous amount of stress in the process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Actor. In other words, I am a storyteller using my body and voice. I am proud to say that I’ve done some cool projects with some cool people. This year, I worked with some amazing directors for the first time: David Huang; Max Kane. I am really looking forward to how these projects turn out. I am a very conflicted person: I want to be seen and heard as Jeff Chen, yet I also want to be no one so I can be everyone; I want to attain nobility but I would love to play villain characters; etc. This duality that lives inside of me sets me apart.
What were you like growing up?
I remember that I daydreamed a lot as a kid. I was a hero, a wizard, a deity, etc. True story: my mom called me delusional because I would just skip homework and daydream. The fastest way to escape my reality. No wonder I became an actor. I was a very curious, playful child that wanted to have endless playtime. I guess I did baby Jeff justice by pursuing this career haha.
