Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayli Sandoval.
Hi Kayli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a soon-to-be college graduate of San Diego State University. In school, I studied Journalism, emphasizing my curriculum in media studies and minoring in film. Outside the classroom, I have slowly grown a following across Instagram, Tik Tok, and YouTube for short video edits and mixed media graphics.
After struggling to find purpose during the first few months of the Covid-19 lockdown, I rekindled my love for creative endeavors. My school offered the Adobe Cloud for free, and my best friend and I decided we would spend our time learning how to edit great videos. Before this moment, I had only ever edited videos on iMovie. These videos were never really for public consumption but rather my entertainment.
The very first video I created on Adobe Premiere Pro was a recap-style montage of events that had taken place in 2020. In mere hours, the video began to blow up — totaling over 16.1 million views on Tik Tok. After going viral on Tik Tok, the same video received hundreds of thousands of views across Twitter and Instagram. This affirming moment gave me confidence in video editing. I would then upload a couple more videos that would reach millions of people.
After getting seen by the right eyes, I was hired for my first editor job with Tik Tok Influencer Vinnie Hacker. I learned a lot from the experience, and I began a freelance journey of editing and graphic design soon after. I am now a full-time editor for YouTuber Mai Pham.
Moving forward, I hope to create more independent content and experiment in various creative fields.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge throughout my creative journey has been an inner battle of what my art is worth. When a hobby becomes a job, dealing with burnout feels impossible to avoid. I’ve gone through it more than once and it can be a critical hit to one’s motivation and health. I’ve learned to prioritize my mental health and listen to my body more frequently. I have a pretty good radar for knowing when burnout is near, and I hope to minimize ruts like those as I continue to work on new jobs and passion projects of my own.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Art has been an expressive medium in my life for so long. Although I’ve just turned 21, this nurtured creativity has allowed me to experiment with different forms of art and expression. Currently, I pour a lot of time into video editing, drawing, and graphic designing.
