Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Danny.
Lawrence is a CPA, JD, Former IRS Agent, and author of “Steering Clear of The IRS While Legally Minimizing Your Taxes.” He began his professional career working for an entertainment-based West Los Angeles CPA Firm. Lawrence then took a position with a national top-twenty firm where he was exposed to larger clients working on certified audits including a certified audit of a large publicly held company. Next, he accepted a position with a local CPA firm where he gained valuable hands-on experience working with smaller businesses and various individual clients.
Before his employment with the Internal Revenue Service, Lawrence had the honor of working with one of the nation’s most prominent and well-respected criminal tax attorneys on a criminal tax matter. Later, he opposed his mentor when he worked cases as an IRS civil fraud agent.
Lawrence next became a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service, went through extensive training, and began auditing individuals and businesses. He began to learn the inner workings of the IRS, how the process operated, and how the IRS perceived various audit issues. Next, Lawrence moved to the Civil Fraud Division of the IRS where he was fortunate enough to be selected to attend Special Enforcement Training in Detroit, Michigan and Expert Witness Training in San Francisco, CA. He participated in joint investigations with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS and testified in a criminal tax trial as an expert witness.
Lawrence opened his own practice in May 1993. Since then, he has represented numerous individuals and businesses before the IRS both in audits, appeals, audit reconsideration, payroll tax matters and collection cases.
Also, he has participated in several cases as an expert testifying in marital dissolutions, business disputes, and has served as a litigation consultant.
Lawrence has authored several articles which have appeared on the California Society of CPA’s website and in The San Fernando Valley Business Journal. These articles are entitled “How Unfiled Tax Returns Hinder Your Chances of Settlement With The IRS,” “How Not To Finance Your Business,” and “Portions of The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 Are A Mirage.” These articles also appear on his website, https://www.cpaformerirsagent.com, under Articles Written. Furthermore, Lawrence has been interviewed on the radio various times on topics including IRS Tax Matters and Strategic Tax Planning Opportunities hidden in the tax code.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most of the time it has been a smooth road. However, having started my CPA practice from scratch, there have always been challenges such as getting clients to keep accurate books, getting clients to submit their information in advance of deadlines, and managing a heavy workload.
Yet, I have found great satisfaction in getting my clients top results such as solving their IRS tax problems and saving my clients a lot of money. In some cases the savings were life changing!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lawrence J. Danny CPA P.C. – what should we know?
In addition to representing numerous businesses and individuals before the Exam and the Collection Divisions of the Internal Revenue Service and providing tax compliance services such as individual and corporation tax preparation, I engage in Strategic Tax Planning and restructuring my clients’ individual and business situations to utilize often overlooked and hidden opportunities in the tax code to help them “keep more of what they earn.”
Often my clients also call upon me to analyze the potential tax implications of the sale of their businesses or rental real estate holdings.
My specialty is definitely in the IRS audit and collections areas representing numerous businesses and individuals in various IRS tax matters.
I’m most proud of spotting issues, alerting my clients to them and coming up with material solutions. Some of my success stories have been life changing, savings clients hundreds of thousands of dollars.
What makes me unique is having worked “on both sides of the fence,” as an IRS Agent and currently as a CPA opposing the IRS and having worked with one of the nation’s most prominent and well-respected criminal and civil tax attorneys in the country!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Many years ago I met one of the nation’s most prominent and well-regarded criminal tax attorneys’, Bruce I. Hochman, now deceased, who suggested that I work for the IRS. I had the honor of working with Mr. Hochman and the attorneys at his firm and then later opposing them in several cases.
I also met and worked with an older CPA, George Weinbaum, an MBA with an Economics degree from the University of Chicago. He was and is a fountain of knowledge and has lent me his ear and shared his wisdom numerous times.
The Internal Revenue Service provided valuable opportunities by sending me to Expert Witness Training in San Francisco, CA and Special Enforcement Training in Detroit, MI and gave me challenging cases to work on and had me testify in court in a criminal tax trial.
Many of my clients who have been very supportive referring me family and friends and bestowing much trust in me over many years.
