Life & Work with Cailyn Peddle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cailyn Peddle.

Hi Cailyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been performing for as long as I can remember. I did my first musical when I was six and haven’t stopped since then. When I was fifteen, I decided that acting was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I began training seriously and have been doing so for years now.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
‘Struggling actor’ is a term you hear a lot, and I think that’s true for most of us to an extent. I have probably auditioned hundreds, maybe thousands of times in the past five or so years and have booked only a handful of roles. It isn’t as bad as it sounds, though, because auditioning is the job. It is a wonderful opportunity to play a part for a few minutes, learn something new, and then move on. And when you do get work after hundreds of rejections and never hearing back, it amplifies the feeling of gratefulness tenfold. If you are passionate about what you are doing, you can’t ever stop. I am always so excited when I get a new audition because acting is what I love, even if I can’t do it on a stage or set every day yet.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor because I love examining humanity. I love looking inside a person and discovering who they truly are. I love the empathy of it all but also the release it provides. Having license to cry or scream or laugh as a job is pretty amazing. It really is the art of being human, feeling things, and trying to make other people feel things. It can be telling important stories, but also just escapism. I also have worked as a casting director, production assistant, and child guardian which has provided me with a different perspective on the industry and helped me appreciate the value and importance of every single individual involved.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Just be. Be yourself, be present, and be open. In a scene and in life, don’t reach for things. Start from where you are and let yourself be affected by others and by life. Let yourself feel things. Find a way to appreciate as much as you can and find empathy in that.
