Today we’d like to introduce you to Selina Thomas.
Hi Selina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was a single mom of three young girls when I moved to Santa Clarita in 2010. My priority was to find a safe community with great schools and to be able to rebuild my life from a recent divorce. Santa Clarita had all the elements of what I needed my job was to activate what was around me. I enrolled my kids in athletics and they were in great schools this accelerated their development and growth to the point that they’re all honor scholar-athletes. In 2015 built a business, 6 Degrees HR Consulting, an outsourced HR firm literally out of Starbucks. By 2019 when Covid struck many of the small businesses that I served asked me to run for city council so by 2020, I was suddenly in a political landscape doing things that had never been done before. I am a no-party preference candidate running without a party or financial support. I was truly grassroots. With only a few days away from the midterm elections, I am ready to take my seat at the table to represent not only was possible in Santa Clarita but a diverse and growing community. I’m so proud of my candidacy, the way that I ran my race is true to me my integrity and my work ethic. I am hoping to translate all of that to being the first woman of color to serve on city council here. Santa Clarita is the third largest city in Los Angeles county. It will be a huge milestone for everyone but really a full-circle moment for me.
I am really excited to be on the threshold of being able to represent what it looks like to pursue and persevere no matter the odds.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a long road more than a rough road. I know it will be worth it with the win on November 8th. Me pursuing something that has never been done before has been an honor and a sacrifice. There is real personal sweat equity in my candidacy. All the ups and downs is part of the journey. I embrace the good with the bad. As I reflect now with just a few days away, I learned so much about myself, so much about my community and so much about what I’m really capable of. Some of the struggles really have been just maintaining a balance of my responsibilities to my girls, my company along with this pursuit. I am looking forward to taking the time of with them and being still.
As you know, we’re big fans of 6 Degrees HR Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I started my own HR company 6 Degrees HR consulting right out of a Starbucks in 2014. The premise of it is to provide outsourced human resource support to small to medium size companies. There were so many companies in my community that needed help. My company grew very rapidly from so proprietor to a corporation. We are now trademarked and serving companies internationally. I am considered an expert in the field and the go-to expert in Human Resources especially in this recovery from Covid. www.6degreeshrconsulting.com
What matters most to you?
Helping others has always in the most important thing to me. In every profession I ever had I was always helping people. Prior to going into HR, I was a social worker in Bakersfield California that really gave me an insight into people, so now working in the space in the business sector I can really utilize those skills in helping in a larger way. Serving my community now is what matters to me the most. If anyone knows me my daughters matter the most and showing them that you can do anything with hard work.
