Check Out Brett Stanley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Stanley.

Hi Brett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an Underwater Portrait Photographer, I have the very unique job of creating photographs of people under the water! Think studio portrait photographer, but my studio is the backyard swimming pool.

I’ve worked with all ranges of people from families to celebrities, including underwater maternity photos with Brittany Bell and Nick Cannon, and my work has been featured in magazines, tv shows, and album covers.

I also create and build underwater sets – whole rooms for my clients to pose in – which is a lot of fun and very unique.

I’m also an underwater cinematographer, working on films, commercials, and music videos that need scenes underwater.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Shooting underwater is a challenge in itself, it’s so much harder than on land – and when things go wrong, they tend to go very wrong. There’s also no real formal way to learn how to do it, so I’ve really been self-taught from the beginning, which to be honest I love because I don’t have any rules to follow, and most of my best work has come from just making things up!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think my work is different from others because I truly love the underwater world, it’s my happy place and where I go to when I dream. It’s unlike anywhere else and it pushes me to be more creative. I’m not one for copying others’ work, I pride myself on trying to create imagery that is wholly unique and original.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Underwater photography is becoming more accessible, and with the advent of the new Avatar film being shot practically underwater I do see a surge in this genre.
