Today we’d like to introduce you to Amarachi Odinma.
Hi Amarachi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Amarachi Odinma, I’m a creative, living and thriving in LA! Ever since I can remember, I have always dreamed of pursuing my career in television and entertainment. In fact, I still have a video of five-year-old me talking about being famous when I grew up.
My parents immigrated from Nigeria to West Michigan with hopes of providing my siblings and I with a better life. After my parent’s divorce, I was raised solely by my hard-working single mother, who serves as my constant inspiration to this day.
In my 20s I moved to LA with two suitcases and never looked back! In my career in entertainment, I have worked as a journalist, a red-carpet host (Viacom Networks), I’m a published plus-size model and I have had minor roles in a few feature films. Most recently, you can catch me on BET’s “After Happily Ever After” a reality TV show in which exes choose new partners for their past love.
I have also opened Amara Beauty cosmetics line (amarabeautyglam.com), which showcases my custom beauty favs. I believe anyone that is interested in natural glam can find a product there that they will love!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had many struggles along the way. I have been striving in this industry for over 20 years. I recently went through a divorce and that has been a huge obstacle to overcome as a single working mother in the entertainment industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The things that set me apart from others would be my optimism, passion, personality, and beauty! As a plus model, I have to overcome stereotypes of what a model should look like.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
My app is google
My favorite book is the “The Vanishing Half” which tells the story of two Black sisters in the 1950s and the trajectory of their lives based on their racial identification. One sister decides to pass as White, ends up marrying rich, and is a stay-at-home mother. While the other sister identifies as African American and works at a local diner in her hometown.
My favorite podcast: Rachivation Chitchats (new episodes coming soon :))
I also enjoy Revolt TVs podcast Drinking Champs!
