Life & Work with Alexandra Mari

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Mari.

Hi Alexandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It’s a little cliche– I stumbled into portrait photography as a teenager using a point and shoot camera we had lying around the house. It was pretty much an instantaneous obsession. I was the kid running around taking photos of anything and everything, and having a blast while doing it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been an experience marked by a lot of learning curves. Those times have always been the best teachers and have brought about the moments I’ve learned the most from. More than anything it’s been interesting navigating the ebbs and flows of what I’m interested in shooting and finding ways to make those transitions as my focus changes artistically.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
These days I focus primarily on fashion editorial and music photography after branching out for several years into fine art wedding photography. On the documentary side, my primary interest is capturing people in the rawest and most honest moments. And similarly, I love how this can translate into editorial and portrait work – finding ways to portray the grittiness that makes the human experience so varied and colorful.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m most interested in books and inspirational sources that are outside the direct realm of the work that I do. I’ve been deriving a lot of inspiration from film recently, noticing the nuance of lighting and cinematography choices and how much goes into telling a story in a way that’s fresh and poignant.

I also love allowing femininity and sensuality to influence the work that I do. The Wild Woman’s Way by Michaela Boehm was a fantastic exploration into ecstatic dance and some other practices that I personally really enjoy for embodying a more fluid creative state.
