Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrell Pyro Johnson.
Hi Jarrell Pyro, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“My story is the story of struggle, resilience, and triumph.” I was born in Compton, California. I refer to this era in my life as “A young black man in a crime-infested, low-income area of California.”
Growing up in Compton had its ups and down, its good and its bad. I learned from my experiences and from the experiences of others in my community, as it changed my outlook on life dramatically. I attended Hampton University and majored in Sociology and minored in Music Engineer.
In college, I fell in love with people and learned to respect them. I realized that my story, up to that point, was just one story, a very small piece, in one giant puzzle that makes up this world. I pursued a way to build unity throughout my community and to society by being a voice. My story currently consists of finding a multitude of ways to bridge gaps and bring awareness to the inequities within our world through my creative expression in Music and Film and other outreach I can muster.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I see the world through the lens of Sociology and through that lens, I see many hardships impacting the unification of our society. One of those hardships as an up-and-coming artist was finding funding to support my artistic expression which impacted my ability to impact. In addition, growing up with minimal resources, as an adult I now understand the gap in our attainment of financial literacy. This gap is contributing to not just communities but the country at large. Moreover, this gap is depreciating wealth accumulation and management.
Another challenge like many other artists is expanding my omnipresence. To elaborate, I believe omnipresence is a superpower. It is the ability to be seen and heard everywhere at once.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work revolves around sharing my vision with the masses. Beginning as an artist, I always assumed that the world would only receive me through music. I have two albums available on all streaming platforms “Symphony in LA Minor” and “Life is a Musical.” However, as I evolve I have come to understand that my vision is better shared in other avenues in addition to music. This evolution consists of acting, producing, directing, and writing, in this way I have been able to expound my vision. I have recently had the opportunity to star in multiple projects, some independent and major movies. These films include “Glass Jaw,” “The Outlaw Johnny Black,” “5150,” “Obstacle Corpse,” “Rahma” which is a short film directed by Fahmy Abdisheikh and of course the illustrious “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” directed by the great Ryan Coogler.
Lastly, my most recent evolution has been learning more about wealth accumulation and how to help others build their own wealth and create their own business ideas and creations and I do this through my newly formed business JPJ Consulting and also Pyro Productions.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a Mentor is no easy task and seems impossible for someone beginning their journey in whatever avenue they are choosing. However, many times our mentors are right in front of us, we simply have to be able to identify them and seek their guidance. My first mentor was my English Teacher Mr. Michaels. Mr. Michaels was influential in my discovery of who I am because not only was he my English Teacher but he was also an Actor on a daytime soap opera that was popular at the time. The most significant lesson Mr. Michaels taught me was that you can still pursue your passion while also helping someone else pursue theirs.
In our current world, the best mentors we have access to are books and YouTube. The best thing about these two options is that they are free and available to everyone and anyone seeking knowledge and willing to apply the teachings to their own lives.
