Hidden Gems: Meet Angie Gonzalez of Emulsion Bakeshop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Gonzalez.

Hi Angie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello! It is so nice to share my story with you today. Growing up within a large extended family was fun! We continuously had someone’s birthday to celebrate. It was fun to be surrounded by all my cousins, aunts, and uncles. But when the celebration was over, I was back to my reality. I grew up as an only child with no one to play with at home. There were many activities and games that were not as fun as a single-player, but all that changed on my 8th birthday. I was gifted an Easy-Bake oven! I enjoyed creating cakes and cookies and seeing how a mixture of ingredients became something delicious. I would be eager to go home from school to create more sweets and give them to my family. I used my Easy-Bake oven until it gave out, but I simply transitioned to the real oven. I started creating cakes out of the box mixtures when I was about 15. It quickly became my favorite hobby.

Fast forwarding a couple of years, after I graduated high school, I enrolled into college pursuing a degree as a paralegal. I quickly realized that was not making me happy. I was stressed, feeling lost, and unhappy with school. Seems like my love for the true crime was not exactly what I thought it would be. One day as I had a midterm approaching, I realized I was so stressed over the assignment, so I went to my happy place….baking! I began to bake and I quickly lost myself in the batter. When I was done baking, I realized I was happier and less stressed. That was when I knew I had to pursue a career as a Pastry Chef.

I was in disbelief that I was turning my favorite and therapeutic hobby into a career? That was unheard of! Yet a couple of years later, I was graduating from Le Cordon Bleu. I became my family’s first college graduate.

I am thrilled to continue to share my favorite hobby with others. It is my honor to know my creations bring people together and someone out there is enjoying time with their family as much as I did growing up. I also get to share my craft and teach my daughter, Azeneth, about the possible career choices. Lawyers, paralegals, doctors, and teachers are awesome but the world also needs Pastry Chefs to sweeten things up.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been rocky as a first-generation entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship can be lonely and feeling lost seems to be common, but surrounding yourself with like-minded people is key. One must constantly be a student, there is always something new to learn.
