Today we’d like to introduce you to Brit Phatal.
Hi Brit, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a multidisciplinary artist from Montreal, Canada specializing in beauty direction and makeup artistry. I studied art history at university and during that time, I felt a strong desire to get creative, so I would experiment with clothes and makeup and photography on myself by doing self-portraits.
After getting my undergrad diploma, I got asked to assist this renowned makeup artist, and that is how I got my start in the industry. Now I feel very lucky to connect with people through photography and makeup.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I remember being encouraged by peers and fellow makeup artists to stick to one discipline and to tame down my artistry in order to keep commercial clients. I decided to focus on my own growth and my own creative journey.
In the beginning, I was met with a lot of resistance, but I believed in my vision and I knew I needed to keep pushing boundaries without having to compromise my vision.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a makeup artist who also dabbles in creative direction in photography. While I have a very extensive and researched approach to makeup, my process with photography is very straightforward and candid.
I am known for my eccentric and audacious looks. While I have had the chance to work and collaborate on beauty direction with Vogue, Valentino and a Kardashian sister, I am most proud of my personal projects where I get to cast, style, glam and shoot, as my creative vision is not being compromised.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think it is very important to take risks, not only with your career but also in life. I have never regretted taking a major risk, as I have trained myself to be comfortable with the idea of failure, as it is inevitable in life. I am equally as proud of myself when I fail as when I succeed, as it would have meant that I have allowed myself to be vulnerable and to grow.
