Today we’d like to introduce you to Rolando Castillo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was always inspired by the murals and graffiti in the city around me. What caught my attention was the seriousness and playfulness artists had about letters, which later translated into my love for typography. I would sketch and draw in my early teens and knew I wanted to be an artist. My uncle recommended I consider graphic design as a career path as a teen and I did. I began my schooling at Los Angeles Trade Technical College and transferred to ArtCenter College of Design. When I learned that I can continue learning for a lifetime about graphic design, I knew I would be engaged fully. I continue to try and pull from my early inspiration for graffiti into my type explorations today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Trusting the process has been challenging. During the “process” the outcome is not clear or obvious and you have been ok with not knowing what the results will be. I am learning how to be ok in the process by being as open as possible to any ideas, even the “wrong” ones. The more I am ok with not knowing what the outcome is going to be, the more I can allow myself to experiment and hopefully uncover new ideas and solutions. Removing the pressure of having to get it perfect right away has yielded some great outcomes, and I think trusting the process will be an ongoing challenge that hopefully will continue to keep getting better.

I am currently working as a designer at Hello Design in Culver City.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Graphic design is ever-changing with production. The future of technology will impact how and what we design. It will be very interesting to see how emerging technologies will impact the design field.
