Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Kaoz.
Hi Kelvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out playing guitar when I was 11. I was entirely self-taught until I took lessons at Los Angeles Valley College when I was about 18. I learned about music and the music industry (how to start your own brand and publishing company) then I received a scholarship to study with the president of the GFA (Guitar Foundation of America) at Loyola Marymount University where I graduated with a degree in Classical Guitar Performance. From there, I sold antique guitars for about two years then I taught at various schools for a bit. I created my performance platform Alternative Kaoz to fill a need for all the friends I have that are excellent musicians and performers but don’t have a place to express their true artistry. It has since organically grown to include elements of esoteric information and kink.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The main resistance I experienced doing this project is really defining what it was and how it is different from other outlets doing similar things. I wanted to stand out from other pages that run live music events, so I niched down to focus on members of the Alternative POC community since we don’t often have space to perform at. Finding the people interested locally was also a challenge but thanks to the internet, I was able to connect with people nationwide with similar interests.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional musician, music educator, producer, and actor. I am most proud of the online community I’ve curated for Alternative POC to discover new music, share their art and experiences. What sets me apart from others is that I host a lot of my shows with my puppet son Lil Kaoz. In addition to that, I combine my love for music, kink, and esoteric knowledge to provide a one of a kind experience to all who come to my lives shows in person and online.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important thing I’ve learned to be open-minded to all the opportunities being presented to me, be patient, and to plan for the most successful version of your business.
