Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Garcia Caro.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got into music at a very young age. I remember coming home from school and watching Daft Punk and Gorillaz music videos that were running on the TV. At 14, I bought my first Dj controller, a Numark DJ iO. I would spend the whole day using it nonstop, playing my favorite records over and over again. I think the turning point for me was when I turned 17. I started playing some big shows in my city, Monterrey (Mexico), sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the dance scene like Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, and Nicky Romero, to name a few. It was at that point, I knew that I wanted to go all-in on music. I studied music engineering production at ITESM Monterrey and during my senior year, I did a year-long study abroad program in Valencia at Berklee College Of Music. It was while I was studying in Valencia that my life took a 180 turn. I met an amazing group of friends who convinced me that Los Angeles was the place to pursue a career in music. They had all planned on moving to Los Angeles after graduating and I knew I wanted to join them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After graduating in December of 2018, I moved to LA. I remember being so nervous because at the time, I could count the number of people I knew in this huge city on one hand. I had the whole LA living experience when I arrived. I couch-surfed, stayed in different airbnbs, and I even lived in a garage for a couple of months (with a few extra insects as roommates). Eventually though, after a few months of struggling, I was lucky for being in the right place at the right moment at the right time as I landed an internship with an amazing publishing company called Honua Music.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m now the Creative Director of Honua Music, a boutique music publishing company in LA. We represent a handful of incredible writers and producers who have had releases with artists like Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, Pitbull, Dua Lipa, J Balvin, and so on. I run the creative department at the company, and we’re responsible for bringing in opportunities for our writers and producers, as well as discovering and signing talent. In this past year alone, we’ve had releases with Katy Perry, Alesso, Robin Schulz, Felix Jaehn, Twice, Sofia Carson, R3hab, and more. I also co-manage alongside my partner Noah Gopen, this sick Latin producer from Mexico who goes by Just Roger (Shakira, Anuel AA, Natanael Cano). He’s definitely making some noise in the Latin music scene and has a big year ahead of him!
One of my favorite things about this job is when an artist releases a song from one of our writers and people around the world love it. It’s crazy how sometimes the biggest songs that end up resonating with millions of listeners start out as just a stripped-back piano track and a vocal. Getting to hear a song like that go from start to release is unlike anything else.
I think growing up on the creative side of music and finding my way into the business side has helped give me a unique perspective in this industry. I can empathize with my writers and producers and I think that is a skill that has set me apart.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always on the lookout for new talent. I listen to about 250 songs a day on various playlists searching for cool music and artists. There’s no better feeling than finding a new song or artist that you really vibe with! You can’t want to share it with everyone! If you have some sick music, you’d like me to hear feel free to send it over to me at info@honuamusic.com 🙂
