Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Majors.
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started singing when I was ten years old. I did “Annie” as my school play and was cast as Annie. Being on the stage felt so natural Like I belonged nowhere else. After that, I knew that’s what I was meant to do with my life. I wrote my 1st song at age 11, and everything went from there. Growing up, it was hard having a special needs brother – but it made me grow up super fast, being a position of his “ 2nd mom”- id always wanna help out. My brother Raymond definitely inspired me to want to succeed in my singing career. And I made it a point to tell myself that I will. As I grew older, I started writing more music, released my 1st single at Age 20, and things have been going uphill throughout the years. I had some of my music play in “Coach” and “Apple” stores all around NYC, I opened for Ella Mai and Jhene Aiko on a combined concert, and I performed on “the Q” show on Fox in front of a live audience. My genre is Pop/R&b with a slight hip hop twist in it (slight rap). I moved to LA from Philadelphia PA (where I lived my whole life) about two years ago and haven’t looked back since. My goal with music is to inspire others and have my music help them through. Whatever it is they are going through. On November 5, my next single “Held” will be out on all streaming platforms, and I’m really looking forward to this one. The song is about being in a situation where someone is hot and cold and you’re constantly in situations where you give yourself to people who don’t deserve you, so you know it’s time to cut ties. It’s like going through an emotional roller coaster ride and when I’m saying “I just wanna be held” I just mean I’m tired of not knowing if he’s gonna be there the next day or not. There will be a music video to this as well. I’m looking forward to the future, lots of good things coming ahead career-wise, so I’m looking forward!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth. Like I mentioned before, my brother is special needs and people don’t realize how much of a toll that can have on a family. I was always trying to be there to help however I could. There was also a period of time when my dad was away for three years and I had to sort of step up and be “the man of the house” in a way, which is definitely hard for a 21 years old girl to do. If it weren’t for that I probably would have moved to LA a sooner, but I couldn’t leave my mom and brother. Everything happens for a reason though, and I do believe timing is everything. No regrets!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a pop/r&b, singer, songwriter. I have recently also started incorporating slight raps into my music. I think what sets me apart from others is my unique tone of voice. Growing up, I was inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, and Christina Aguilera. Lyrically I was actually inspired by Eminem and J Cole. They were just always so real and raw when they would tell their stories and that’s how I wanted to be. I’m most proud of my growth as an artist, as a songwriter- just how far I’ve come even music-wise. Some of my best stuff is stuff I’ve released now.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
PATIENCE!! Haha timing is out of your control, you have to learn to be patient and put the work in knowing that when the time is right, your results will come.
