Today we’d like to introduce you to Vantha Somm.
Hi Vantha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I studied fashion design at Cal State Long Beach and during those years, I discovered my passion for makeup which turned into a side gig. I started doing bridal makeup at 20 years old. I was slowly growing my clientele through the years and got a cosmetics retail job. I learned so much when I became a business manager, it taught me how to run a successful business from event planning to hourly sales goals. From that point on, it gave me the knowledge I needed to start my own makeup studio. I saved up 20k and left my full-time job to open up my makeup studio in 2017. I was only a certified pro artist and the state of CA fined me for not having a license as a business owner. They forced me to shut down and go to school to obtain a license. At that point, it would have been easy to say, I quit. Instead, I found an affordable beauty school and completed 600 hours within four months! It was a blessing in disguise because I discovered my love for skin treatments which goes perfectly with makeup. When I graduated, the country went into lockdown due to the pandemic. What would have felt like another setback was actually the best thing for me. I was on the go for years with no PTO and weekends off. The lockdown gave me time to center myself and strategize my new business plan. I felt like a new and improved businesswoman. As soon as things slowly opened back up, I got my license and planned for my reopening. I’m so glad I never gave up and persisted through the tough times. It was not easy and by far, the hardest thing I have ever done. I am finally in a place where I control my schedule and not have to worry about money, I only work three days a week. I created this opportunity for myself!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was the bumpiest road I had ever been on! I encountered a lot of obstacles, some of my struggles were Lack of confidence and putting myself out there on social media. I struggled with standing up for myself when clients tried to nickel and dime me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist. I specialize in skin services and special event makeup like bridal makeup. I’m known for my natural soft glam makeup style and bubbly personality. I’m most proud of the relationships I have built over the years and being trusted by my clients. I am very outgoing and can hold a conversation with anyone. My ability to connect with people is something I’m most proud of.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, I have learned the power of social media! Being active on social media keeps your audience and clients in the loop. Also, it should be a given but, always save extra money in case you need to close or take time off for your health.
