Life & Work with P Steezy

Today we’d like to introduce you to P Steezy.

Hi P, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Redondo Beach, CA. Moved to Puerto Rico for a bit and came back to LA around 4 or 5 years old. Around the same time, I found hip hop and fell in love with music. Always been athletic as a kid so I played a lot of sports when I was young. Baseball is somewhat of a Puerto Rican tradition so I grew up playing the sport until around high school. Stopped playing sports and focused on my passion for music.

Something about the way it made me feel is what gravitated me to the art. I grew up very raw and rugged due to me living with my dad and two uncles and so I had access to all of the greats and their music, Tupac, snoop, ice cube and so on. By the time I got to third grade, I knew every lyric of all of my favorite songs and began to find my talent while doing so. I started writing my own music around freshman year of high school and stayed consistent with my craft. Like anyone else that is a beginner at anything, I wasn’t that good at first but something about the vision I have didn’t let me quit. Time went on and I got better, a lot better. So good, by the time I was a senior I was voted next superstar. I would sit in class and write verses, go home and write verses, studied my favorite artist and did my musical homework as the years went. Around 21 – 22, I started my own label known as Black Roses Inc and formed a group of childhood friends that grew to be great artists as well. We opened up for Warren G, Ty Dolla Sign, Nipsey Hussle on the Crenshaw tour and also headlined our own shows from here to Oregon. Released first mixtape Illumestrella and performed a lot of those songs at the shows we did. Started a SoundCloud page and with little to no advertising reached over 130,000 plays and counting. Eventually releasing an official single by the name of Ya Tu Sabe on all major outlets and currently working on finishing up the sequel to my first project, called Eye 2.

About a year ago, right before the pandemic I started a family business selling a cultural Puerto Rican drink by the name of coquito, somewhat of a Puerto Rican eggnog. The brand name is called Go’coquito and is currently available online at gocoquito.com or IG at Go’coquito. Available in four different flavors at the moment and growing. It all started with a conversation I was having with my brother on the way to Las Vegas to see our family for Christmas. To see what it’s growing into now is amazing. I’ve always had a very entrepreneurial mindset but never had any plans of one day owning my own liquor brand, but the power of a good convo and a great idea was all I needed. I sat down one night and made a logo for it and thats the moment I knew it would be real. Put it in motion and as of today, have reached over 3k in sales. With my new project in the works and the drink doing well, my hands are full of hard work and big steps day by day but I love it. This year will be a big year for the brand and for the music. Finally planning on releasing a lot more music and visuals to the singles I put out, I’m predicting a very busy year for me and my camp.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Coming from Inglewood California, if you’re from Cali you know that there’s no such thing as a smooth road. We def had our trials and tribulations along the way. Long nights writing music until the sun came up. Surviving off value menus just to have enough money for studio time. We grew up having to hustle to put ourselves in positions to prosper. WE meaning me and my team. We all struggled together and made sure we always had a way. Times got rough and sometimes even scary because of things we had to do to survive, but always stayed focused on the bigger picture and knew that one day we would be great. Nothing can stop us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist, I’m a creator with a passion for making music and dressing up, I have a unique style. I was raised listening to all types of music, Guns and Roses, Tupac, Green Day, Blink 182, Wutang, Nirvana and so my sense of style is a mix of hiphop and skate/punk. Always been known as someone with a great sense of style, and so I aspire to eventually have my own clothing line. I’m most proud of the fact that I never quit doing what I love no matter the situation. I’m most proud of being a proud Puerto Rican from Los Angeles, thats a rare mix you don’t see too often. I’m most proud of having the opportunity to touch the same stages as legends like warren g and Nipsey Hussle. It’s just a reassurance that my vision isn’t for no reason. This greatness I feel in me I know I was made for. I’m destined to be an icon in my own right. For more than just music but being a leader and a great example of what hard work can make possible for anyone who believes in themselves and stays focused. Don’t let anybody tell you that you aren’t great just because they don’t feel the same. Stay on your path and kick some a*s.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My parents deserve a lot of credit for allowing me to be me and allowing me to express myself however I see fit to. My squad of family and friends, I consider family that always pushed me and kept me lit. Always supported when it was time to show up and show out.
