Today we’d like to introduce you to Mizuki Horigome.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a fashion stylist. I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. I started being interested in fashion when I was working as a writer for a fashion magazine at the age of 18. My parents are magazine writers and I was heavily influenced by them. My job was keeping up with trends and writing feature articles. After a year I decided to quit my job because It was hard to keeping up with both working and studying at school at the same time. I came to California over 4 years ago. I first live in San Diego for a year where I attended community college before my move to LA. I knew that I belonged in the fashion industry and I started working as a sales associate at thrift store on Melrose. I met so many creatives while working there and they inspired me so much. I wasn’t sure exactly what I would do within the industry but I realized that just working at a clothing store wasn’t for me and I really wanted to do something more creative. I was lucky to get an opportunity to assist a stylist after I quit working at the store. He was one of the customers from the store and he asked me to assist a photoshoot. This was my first time that I had ever worked as a stylist. This experience made me realize that this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. From then, I started to reach out to people to do photoshoots and connected with many creatives. I’ve did a ton of free shoots to showcase my work and I started getting recognized as a fashion stylist in LA. I still can’t believe that there’s people who believe in me and think it’s worth paying for my work. I’m proud of myself and appreciate the process along the way to be where I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road to be where I’m at today. It was hard living in LA while pursuing a career as a stylist since I was new to being a stylist without having any connections. The amount of money I invested in myself didn’t equal up to the amount of work. I felt like I was doing on jobs. I also had struggles with managing my time seeing that i would spend so many hours in showrooms trying to multi-task balancing multiple jobs at once.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a fashion stylist. I work with models, artists, photographers etc for music video and editorial shoots. What I’m most proud of is being able to create an iconic look no matter what style the job requires. Sometimes I also make pieces by myself that I can use for styling.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to tell the people who’s reading this that you should always follow your dreams. It may take long and be hard to archive but never give up untill they become real. Magic is in believing. And also, you should always stay ready because you’ll never know when an opportunity comes.
