Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Ramirez.
Hi Diana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My experience growing up in LA was that of your typical inner city kid. I was surrounded by a melting pot of cultures, hustles, and among that graffiti. It was part of our neighborhoods, it was in our schools, and it was something my friends and classmates were doing. I think my love for letters and typography began as a teen which then traveled along with me through college. The standard parent pushes their kids to pursue academic degrees solely based on the salary obtained after graduation. That was not the case for me as art was introduced to me as a form of expression and hustle. My father has been a Tattoo artist for as long as I can remember and he always said “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Words to live by, right? I’ve explored multiple mediums in the past ranging from graffiti itself to makeup artistry to digital illustration. I believe it was essential for me explore these mediums as it is now reflected in my work today. I decided to pursue graphic design because it was something new and fascinating to me. I mean everything we utilize in our everyday lives has somehow been altered or designed by a graphic designer. To take something from our screen and produce it in real life is truly fascinating and rewarding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Design itself is a harder industry to tackle as a WOC. I mean it’s something that I didn’t know much about growing up. Even in college professors and classes lacked a lot of important information in this industry. I didn’t go to a fancy design school but if I did, I’m pretty sure my experience might’ve been much different. Anyways, creatively the hardest thing to tackle is finding your style. We are bombarded with so many artists and designers through social media that it might feel overwhelming. Once you’re through that stage, it gets a lot easier.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a graphic designer and illustrator who specializes in Branding for small businesses. This year I finally launched branding suites targeting small business owners who want a more cohesive and professional look. I love working one-on-one with clients to help build a brand identity that represents them, their vision, and most importantly – their business. This is perhaps one of my recent most prideful achievements.
Apart from branding, I also love creating original content for my page. Most of my content is derived from my experience growing up in LA and motivational quotes/lyrics that mostly reference hip hop songs. Fun fact “SPACEHOES” comes from an MF Doom (RIP) song.
I also run my own online shop where I sell artwork among other merch. It’s pretty fun dabbling in multiple industries however, it’s definitely a lot of work.
I think what sets me apart from others is honestly just my experience and style. No one is out there doing it like you, so take pride in that!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Authenticity. I think keeping it true to your roots will always work in your favor. I’m so tired of being pushed fake narratives through the media. Do you, period.
