Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Tran.
Hi Colton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey to a career in film began when I was 12. I grew up in Utah and was mentored by my neighbor who was a producer, director and editor. I was instantly hooked on the filmmaking process. My passion for film continued to grow throughout the years and I started directing/editing my own films. One of the first films I directed was a short film titled “Monstrosity” that toured the nation in the film festival circuit and gained recognition from managers and agents in Los Angeles. This prompted me to move to Hollywood, California with my producing partner Laura Young.
Soon after moving to LA, I was signed by a manager and was introduced to my soon to be an agent at Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Shortly after, I was cast in a Disney Channel original movie “Cloud 9.” Being on the other side of the camera helped me grow as a director on the technical side and also in how to direct actors more effectively.
I now own my own production company and continue to direct and create with many talented people in LA.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, I would say it’s been pretty smooth. I like to consider myself a positive person and I like to see the best in every experience. The entertainment industry isn’t just a walk in the park though. So I take all of my obstacles and turn them into valuable learning experiences.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started my production company, Colton Tran Films over ten years ago. I am a film director, producer, writer and editor. I wear many hats when it comes to my visions. I love to collaborate but love to make sure the visual comes to life in the right way. I specialize in Horror and Dark Fantasy and I feel like that sets me apart from other young filmmakers. My style is inspired by German Expressionism. My films consist of lots of color contrasted by darkness, shadows, forced perspective and an overall whimsical tone.
How do you think about happiness?
Lots of things make me happy. Life is much better if you let the happiness in. My dogs and family make me extremely happy. I’ve always been very close to my family. I also love Horror films and they make me one happy guy. My career and has spawned from Horror and I continue to stay inspired to this day.
