Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Kerry.
Hi Richard, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a small village in England. After graduating from High School, I attended ecole ‘Les Roches’, one of top hospitality management schools in the world, based in Bluche, Switzerland and operated by the Swiss Hotel Association. After graduating from there, I began my career in the hospitality industry – washing dishes was my first job, then barman, then sous chef, etc. I worked my way into a marketing department for a small restaurant group, which is where I discovered my talent for business, sales and marketing was much greater than my culinary ability. Fast forward to 2008 and I’d worked myself into a position where I could open my own restaurant, along with my brother which was a tremendous success. My best friend passed away suddenly in 2014, which made me reassess my life and altered my goals. I sold my share in the business in 2016 to facilitate my purchase of Tspoons and move to southern California.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Moving to America alone was a big decision. It’s not easy to acquire resident status in the US, neither should it be. I needed to hire an immigration attorney and visit the US embassy in London and Toronto in order to complete the process. I also had to find a business to purchase, which required several visits to California prior to moving. I had no credit rating here and didn’t know anybody. Some of the people I encountered whilst trying to find living accommodation, and completing the purchase of the business, were particularly aggressive and rude towards me. At the time, I put down to me being from a different country, but have since come to learn that business is conducted that way here, which is a little different from my small town back home, where a handshake is worth something.

Tspoons is a unique cooking school in Orange County that specializes in hands-on cooking classes, as well as customized cooking parties and team builders. At Tspoons, our guests not only receive hands-on instruction from our Chef Instructors but then dine on their creations at our large dining table. Our small team comprises chefs from all over the world, and we offer a huge selection of different cuisines in our classes. We offer classes for adults, teens, and children.
